Just want to let you fabulous guys in here know that my beloved flock are sadly gone.

Some of you will have followed their fascinating stories on here with me over the last couple of years and have been a great source of help and support.

They were killed by a fox (mercifully, it was done very swiftly and cleanly) after their shed door warped in the bad weather and a fox was able to break in.

Am really sad and just wanted to let you know I guess, as my "regular" friends are sympathetic but don't really understand!

Fortunately, the second generation (Lavender, Belinda and Fluffy) are alive and well and spoiled at a brilliant farm near our home town. We won't be taking them back as they are so happy where they are.

My plan is to wait until the warmer summer months then take my Daughter to choose a few ex-battery hens to rescue from a local poultry farm.

Rest In Peace Chookies

How wonderful for the hens you will rescue - they will be so happy with their new life. (goodness, I just read what I typed - I do not mean that it is wonderful your beloved birds have died. But that it is wonderful that you will be rescue hens. ~ sorry)

Are you going to do something about the fox first? I don't know about you but if a fox got a single of my birds it would be the end for Mr. Fox.

Thanks for your lovely messages.

Neither myself or my neighbours have seen the fox, just the evidence it left, and where I live in England we don't keep guns or anything like that!

It would be easy to hate the fox, but it's an animal too, and we think it has young to feed, she was simply doing what she has to do. Sad as it is, my 7 year old pointed out that it's what nature intended and part of the circle of life!

If anything, I blame myself for not checking the security more.

I will most certainly be fox-proofing any future chicken residences!

It must have been a heartbreaking scene! In reaching out to rescue chickens when you are ready

Thank you!

Mercifully, the carnage wasn't too bad. Just feathers and a tiny amount of blood. Have seen much worse on here! And my chickens have occasionally inflicted more blood shed on each other!

We think the fox carried them away.

Miss them so much! Raised them from eggs and loved them like children!
