My beautiful d'Uccle roo was almost killed by a dachsund

Yup. Sounds like my babies. Sure hope everyone starts laying by EASTER!

It's going to make TN very sad, but I'm today I'm pulling the girls out of the garage and putting them back in their little coop. He has to stay inside for another few days, though. I think he can keep himself warm enough, plus the temp is supposed to go up again tomorrow.
The girls need more exercise than they can get in the brooder cage. And it will be easier to give TN meds and monitor how much he's actually eating and drinking if he's all alone.

But you should hear the kids whine and complain about his crowing in the morning

Their bedrooms are over the garage. Better than an alarm clock!! I turn on the garage light about 10 minutes before I need to get them up and they are UP right on schedule

DD2 has been threatening to get a knife and finish what the dog started. Apparently I wasn't supposed to turn the garage light on before noon on Saturday.

Yesterday morning TN was looking pretty good, and didn't want any first-aid treatment. Since it's the first time he's avoided me, I left him be.

I had errands to run with the kids after work, but since it was a pretty day DH let the chickers all run free when he got home. He kept TN up by the house, but let his millie girls roam free.

There was a racket, as a millie girl was targeted by the frizzle roo. TN leapt into the air and flew the length of the yard to land right on top of Fozzie Frizzle! DH thinks that's about 1/2 an acre of flight time. And the fact that TN landed exactly on top of Fozzie made DH think that TN's vision is just fine. It took DH a few seconds to get across the yard and split them up, but he said there were no new injuries to TN.

DH threw TN and his girls into their banty coop last night. I didn't have time to walk down there this morning. Our temps are going up, though, and I'll be able to let them out after work today.

We're giving Fozzie Frizzle to a guy I work with who has no roos right now. I've promised my daughter her choice of Silkie chick when they hatch

I hope he gets much much better soon!

I noticed that TN has a girl named Cinnamon; just wanted to say that I have a red star pullet named Cinnamon! lol

Yep, those dachshunds are bred for chasing rabbits, squirrels, etc. due to their short legs. We have a mini dachshund named Riley, who is a sweet heart, and he leaves the chickens alone. barks at our RIR rooster once and a while. LOL

and he's obsessed with chipmunks and squirrels.

But anyway, I'm glad your TN boy is doing better!

Good luck and great job taking care of him!

Thanks! I've really been worried about him, and am still worried about secondary infection. It's good that he's feeling so plucky, but he had some terrible injuries!
I have pictures, but haven't posted them since they are so graphic. I may later, though, when I know he really is out of the woods. Just a small before and after pic...

Cinnamon is a sweetheart. She's very docile except when Fozzy tries to climb on her! All 3 millies will be glad when Fozzy goes to live on the farm.

Dachsunds are cute, but not my kind of dog. I've not seen it again since the day of the attack. From the puncture wounds on TN's comb, I suspect it came upon him and tried to drag him off by the head.
And I think TN was caught off-guard because he'd been fighting with Fozzie.
Being a chicken mama is hard. They can get badly injured so very quickly!

Just found your thread! Wow that is one tough rooster. TN is a fighter- in more ways than one. Cudos to you for your wonderful care

Tennessee is back to his usual spunky self!

Thanks to antibiotics from Barnyard, I am no longer worried about infection. We're ready to scale back on the dosage. His face will never look 'purty' again. And I wish I'd trimmed that dangly bit of eyelid.
It's a good thing he works for treats. Mom giving him his 'special drink' each day has worked perfectly

So he gets to stay with his girls. That makes us both happier.

And his girls may be ladies soon! Cinnamon was getting pounced on by a newly energized TN yesterday.
And mean little Fozzy Frizzle has his own harem in Cocke County. His new owner thinks Fozzy is beeeeyoooteeeful!

So, tentatively (because it doesn't pay to get too cocky), I think we have a happy evey after* scenario going on here. And I am soooo relieved!

Thanks for all the well-wishes, ya'll. I

BYC!!!

When DD1 was 4 years old "Cinderella" was her favorite movie. Every time it played the closing music she would chortle, "And they lived happy evey after!"
So now, whenever that phrase comes to mind I hear that cute little bitty voice in my head....
