My Beloved Roo Is Becoming A Problem...despite all attempts to turn him around.

You need to show him you are the " Top Bird", don't ever run away from him because that tells him you are scared and he will chase you.
What you need to do is, every time you go near him stomp your feet and show him your the boss, even if it means chasing him ( if he attacks you again ) with a stick, even until he's too tired to run, my friend suggested this and it has really worked for me, hope this helps.

Maybe there's hope for me roo. As baby chicks I never "snuggled" them. I handled them daily to inspect them and to move them to a day pen. I hand fed them meal worms. They love freeze dried meal worms. Most of the time I just watched them and talked to them. Not knowing I had a roo, he got treated the same. If he eats aggressive he'll be stuck in the coop while the girls enjoy the grass in the whoop run. I'm hoping for the best, he will stay mild.

I don't tolerate aggressive roosters. They can be very dangerous and really hurt you or someone else. Just think if he got one of your eyes! I would personally send him to the soup pot. I love my roosters very much, but I only keep tame ones who take good care of their girls and are gentle to humans. It's just not worth it to deal with an aggressive one when there are so many great roosters out there. He's well past the teenage phase and I think that his aggressiveness is just his personality.

My very first chicken to raise was a 3 mth old rooster, that my 6 yr old daughter named Goggle, he was givin to us by an aquaintance. He was so sweet and beautuful, and we went and bought 5 chick hens for him. Everything was going great, he let my 6 yr old and 1 yr old girls love in him, he even would help my oldest tie her shoes! Then about 2 mths ago, the hens came to breeding age, and he got MEAN!! He would literally try and kill my girls, my 6 yr old daughter was terrified and heartbroken (I nvr let my 1 yr old outta the house around him)..the attacks by him were constant and nvr let up, I would boot him, for trying to hurt my babies, but it didn't seem to help. After a bad episode of him trying to spur my daughter I had, had enough!! My husband and I are hunters of everything (for food) so I know my way around guns and animals, but I just couldn't pull the trigger, so I made a deal with my husband, if he shot I would "clean" him, so thats how it went (I did give the meat to my mother-in-law), but no animal is worth me girls, especially when they can't even go outside in the own yard. You may have to get rid of him, you will be sad at first, but then you will get a sweet rooster like us, and realize how much more of a peace of mind you will have! Good luck!

Thank you chynasparks, I felt bad at first, but then again, it is so peaceful around here again, Im not sure how old your roo is, so you may have a little more waiting to see. I just dont think any pet owner should have to fear their animal, makes a miserable situation for everyone!

You are so right and you sure dont need an animal hurting little kids. My roo is 20 weeks. I'm hoping for the best in him but will be keeping an eye out for signs. We're good right now. The girls don't fear me so he doesn't have that to deal with. I go inside the coop every day and sit. He's used to me being around. I think I am prepared for him to challenge me. I guess thats inevitable. But my questions to anyone with lots of experience is, is every rooster destined to be mean? Is there hope for my Bill?

i have been chasing mine around as of late lol he hates it but he knows i'm boss

if any chicken pick at you light bop on the beak will correct it

You need to consult the chicken psychologist, Olychickenguy. His name is Ky and he is indeed a chicken psychologist. Three years ago I had two roosters with severe behavior problems. I e-mailed Ky and he worked with me via e-mail to rehabilitate these two roos. I had dramatic success in changing their behaviors.

One roo was aggressive and was a vicious biter. He became the sweetest, most docile roo, very affectionate and trustworthy. The other one was so fearful, so much as reaching for him would result in a complete meltdown, which manifested in attack and fleeing. He, too, was completely transformed, becoming calm and trusting.

Read his blog. http://olychickenguy.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html You'll learn fantastic things about chickens you never knew. It will help to understand a little of why they behave the way they do.

No, they're no all destined to be mean. Meet my buddy Clifford...

Last spring I fostered Clifford for two weeks. He lost two of his friends because they got eaten by a hawk. I managed to catch him, when no one else could - his did leave a mark on my chin for it! But for two weeks I worked with him and managed get him calmed down to the point where began to trust me and he would jump into my hands when getting out of the cage. Clifford moved on & found a great home and is well loved & cared for!
