My birds are getting old :(

Yes, it really depends on housing, feed, ext. A friend had one for almost five years, it died of old age. They have the ability to live longer than a coturnix, it depends though.

Mine are 3. I ordered a new batch because I know they don't have long. I was hoping they would make it to 5 though. Of course, you are talking to a woman with a 21+ year old cat...so who knows around here!

Stella is turning 5 on the 26th

My older quail (going on 5 years like Stella) moved with me from Oregon so FL shouldn't have a factor. Some hens pass on at earlier ages than others, but Kentucky has had terrible weather lately.

The storms were horrible, thank goodness I disn't get much of it. Alabama got the worst of it. It was an extremely cold winter this year too!

Maybe, maybe not. Might be exposed to light more or less. Others might enforce periods of limited light to reduce egg laying. This "might" notice that is a MIGHT increase life span due to allowing a temporary time to recover from egg laying. It's worth trying if a bird is a special pet or important breeder, I think, maybe less so if your birds are primarily production layers. Diets may vary and have an effect, too. Even the housing they are in might play a role -- some housing would reduce stress. Some might increase it. Stress, in general, could shorten lifespan.

I have no idea how old my oldest coturnix are. They were given to me as adults. They have had a low stress life since they came to me and a massive cage (16 square foot for four birds in that covey).

However long they make it is fine with me. I've done what I can to give them a reasonable life. In turn, I use their eggs to nourish our bodies.
