So, I thought I would start recording my project, 'blog' style. Around here (Central Texas) there are a few breeders raising quality birds. But where I am, everyone is about an hour away. I figured, why not start raising quality birds, and at least there should be a market if I need to sell/thin my flocks.

I fell in love with laced birds, when I found silver sebrights. But after hearing that they can be flighty, I found silver laced wyandottes. Perfect! Hardy bird, great disposition, and darn cute to boot! So there I went looking for a supplier of non hatchery SLW. Let me tell you, they are hard to find down here! I'm still on the hunt for good non hatchery birds. I have 1 hen in my flock now, but I bought her 2nd hand, and I"m pretty sure she's hatchery.

Right now I'm working on collecting pure Amercaunas, EEs, OEs, Welsummers, and Marans. I plan to have two of each for my breeding project. Currently, I have 1 EE. lol! I am picking up another EE, and a Maran this week. Along with a cochin bantam frizzled rooster who is all white.

My flock consist of a mix of brown egg layers, RIR, BR, SS, and a SLW. I also have one game mix bantam that I'm hoping with be super broody as she starts to lay. I am also picking up a black cochin bantam that is known for going broody often. (So cross your fingers for me!) I don't think I am dedicated enough to use an incubator. I like the idea of the birds doing what they are meant to do.

I have two coops to work with. One will be for my 'everyday' flock, if you will. And I just got done building a sectioned, predator 'resistent' coop, for broodys/breeding trios/babies. But I have a feeling I will be building another coop before to long lol. I live on a small 'ranch' that consists of my birds, horses, show cattle, and rabbits. We have dogs in leaps and bounds, as well. The girls I have enjoy free range 90% of the time, and they love hanging out in the horse pens. And I love them in there, no need to clean up after the horses :p

So anywho....My goal is visually fun to look at birds that lay blue/green/chocolate colored eggs! I'm sure some people will say its silly, or a waste of time, but it makes me happy :) Feel free to give me opinions, ideas, etc, please. I am sure I will have lots of questions as I go along!

Also, as I gather birds, I will be adding pictures of my 'breeding' stock.

Goldie - EE - Amercauna rooster over GLW hen - Up close she has very nice, albeit fine/light, white lacing on her pretty buff feathers.

She lays gorgeous speckled blue eggs

We got our Welsummer pullet from Melissa Rose, have you heard anything about her yet? & sorry about the coon getting your new roo. We've sure had our own bad luck with them :(
