I've spent the last 3 years convincing my husband that we needed to get chickens. Finally, I was rewarded when my father in law said he would build me a coop as a Christmas present. Well, we got the call the other day that the coop is almost done, so we picked up our chicks yesterday. One of our neighbors was gracious enough to lend us a brood box, water dish, food dish and lamp, so we picked up the rest of the supplies and 8 chicks. I've got some pretty grand plans for these girls. The coop will be installed in the next couple of weeks, then we will construct the run, which will be next to our 30x30 garden. The plan is to free range them a few times a week, but also have the stationary run for them. We do live in bear country here in NJ and have lots of other predator's so I spent a lot of time thinking and planning their run and coop area.
A little bit about me... my husband and I traded in life at the beach to live in the mountains in NJ 3 years ago. We bought a big old (I stress old) farmhouse on 8 acres. We've got 2 cats and 2 dogs and now 8 chicks. Our property is a recognized forestry property and I have been spending a lot of the last 3 years cleaning up the planting and flower beds and growing the garden that had been neglected for years. So there is never nothing going on!
Here are some pictures!
