My Broody Experiment has ended.. :0(

Congrats on your beautiful mommy to be. I had a Partridge Rock, Roxie. She was an awesome mom. I moved her and eggs twice during her experience and she stuck tight. She only went broody that one time but was just wonderful raising her babies. You should do very well with her in your area. Looking forward to hearing how the eggs do.

As far as cold goes, don't worry. I have several in my incubator ready to hatch on Xmas Eve and they were extremely cold when I collected during the days that barely got above freezing here. I would normally have just put them in the refrigerator for the table but I needed the eggs so badly to replace my birds. They are doing just great much to my amazement.

Well I hope my Neckie is as good as your Roxie.

My kids are so eggcited... it's like waiting for Christmas to get here!

Neckie got off of her nest for just a minute today. Took a couple of long drinks of water and was right back on the eggs. It's cold so I know she's a good momma so far. (we put a little mash in a cup on the corner of her nest and I see she has been nibbling)... just waiting to see her let go of some of that nasty broody poop.

Those eggs are beautiful, just like their folks.

And they will be great late Christmas presents.

Well, our 14 year old went out to the coop this morning, put his hand under to check the eggs and found the broken shell of one of them. So now we are down to 7.

I don't know, maybe it's just too cold to be incubating under a hen. He said that the 15 week old Cinnamon Queen had gotten into the nest with Neckie. I wish I could just put a screen or cover over her so that the other hens in the coop wouldn't bother her... but then we'd have to take her out, and force her to drink water...etc...

Oh well, here's hoping for the other 7.

I would screen her in.

When I have a broody that gets into a smaller unit, I take her out 2x a day so she can poop and stretch abit. When I put her back she drinks and eats then right back to the eggs.

They get the idea by about the 2nd day why you are doing it and 'things' happen quicker.

Being off the nest 15 or so mins will not harm the babies. Watch the hen she will tell you if it needs to be in a hurry. Sometimes they will even take a fast dust bath. I take them to an unused grnhse so dirt is not frozen.

When mine get in a hurry to get back to the eggs, will poop and get real antsy about getting back. Feathers puffed and they come running to me to be taken back to the nest. lol

Wishing you well on your hatch!

I screened her in.

We are going to take her off at 1PM each day and then put her back in. Hopefully she'll get the idea like yours did.

And then there were six.

I have her screened in, but somehow another egg had a small puncture wound that leaked all over.

This is discouraging.

I guess I'm going to have to buy a bator and then order a bunch of those blue eggs.
