My broody hen is struggling

She is past the 21 day mark determined broody's will starve to death.

Been raising chickens for years, have had loads of broodys that I refused to allow to brood, some stayed broody for a few months, some went broody and raised clutches up to four times in one year.. Never ever had one starve...

She came into our yard in June this year. She only has recently stayed in her nesting area beginning of December. I noticed she had Scaly feet and I wanted to start treatment on that so I asked my produce lady how to go about it and happened to mention about her behaviour and she suggested to give her the fertile eggs as she though she was broody. I don't have a rooster we live in Suburbia. She ate some yogurt from my finger this morning, and drank lots of water, even though the water was just a few inches away from her nesting she had it when I moved it closer, go figure! I spoke to the vet says not Mareks and to hang in there with the eggs, I opened the blinds today for some light and she is doing better. I'm learning all the time. Wasn't sure how much I could intervene. I'll keep you updated, thanks for caring, I know I sound hysterical but just trying to figure it all out. cheers

In this case the chicken is getting skinny and weak as the days go on.

I don't think she can get skinnier, she had some yogurt from my finger this morning and some water when I placed it right next to her, she was not budging from the nest. I was surprised as the last few days she ignored the eggs. I've read that is ok and the length of time is extended, its all a learning kerb for me.

Just take the eggs from her and do dusting every night.Mites are hard to get rid of.Also give her vitamins such as Sav-a-Chick,Nutri Dench.

It was a sad day for me today. I took my broody hen pictured bok bok to the vet today, a different vet, she said she had a neurological virus, not Marek's, so after all that time sitting I tossed those darn eggs away. She completely collapsed at the vets could hardly breathe. I learnt a lot but I am sorry my pet broody suffered through it. I thought you would like to know the outcome and thanks for trying to figure out what was happening. I'll know next time not to leave it so late to take action. I guess it would have been inevitable in the end but I am wondering if I had not gone off thinking she was broody maybe something could have been done to heal her.

I will wait a while before I get new chicks, I still have my older hens to care for. Happy New Year everyone, the year of the Rooster!
