New question. We have four cats and someone has started to poop on the floor BESIDE the litter box-how rude. And it's not because the box is dirty because I have found poop beside a completely clean/empty box. AHHHH!

chickonaroost, I had the same problem with one of my late cats; she would poop and pee right out front of the litter box without fail, no matter how clean I kept it.

She was a shy cat and didn't get along well with the others (they picked on her) so she didn't like the smell of the other cats, which I guess she could still pick up on even when the litterbox was clean.

I just put newspaper in front of the litterbox, and she would go on that. Not the most ideal situation, but it was the only thing that worked and did make it easier to clean up.

We have a cat that I've winessed balancing on the very edge of the box so that the mess falls to the floor. But she will also use the floor if she decides the litter box is not to her satisfaction. We now keep a towel spread on the floor under the box for those 'misses'. Can't use newspaper because the other cat thinks you play with newspaper, and she shreds it.

Never had anyone play with poop, though. DH says the cats have more toys than the kids... Guess that's a good thing!

The litter box with the lid on top is easy to recreate at a cheaper price. I have two cats and one was fat. I went and bought a sterlite clear tote with a white lid then took a phone book and traced it on one end were the lid dips in, then I cut out the hole, put the litter in and put the lid on. I had two of these placed in the house and they worked great.

I am now a cheater now though. My male lost weight cause he lets the girl eat all the food so I bought one of those rolling litterboxes that I don't have to scoop. Just roll it over and pull out the dirty litter.

For those who have cats not using the litterboxes try adding litterboxes in other areas of the house, moving the litterbox or changing the litter you are using to something without perfumes.

However none of that advice helped me when my male was urinating everywhere. I ended up having to get the girl. After she came home he was happy and started using the litterbox again.
