My cheap chicken condo coop...(pics)

Nice coop, Steve!! Next time I need some scraps, I'll have to remember you!! ....Which is always. hubby is building a brooder for me now...almost done. Looks nice. I'm gonna keep it in the heated garage so when i have to separate a chicken, I'll have somewhere to put her. Your chickens look so happy being outside!

Steve...looks very nice. Good job!

A couple of suggestions to think about: The run fence is topped off with 2x4's. This can act as a perch for hawks. Hawks don't relish diving into an enclosed space, as they don't have much "taking off" room when they exit. They don't mind a perch to check things out from though! They can...effectively, come and go easy with the aid of a perch. If you'd like an easy remedy, you could do this: put eye-screws every few feet into the top wood rails, then pass some inexpensive baling wire through them. A hawk won't want to land on a thin wire! Nor will the chickens. Also...many would recommend a higher fence.

Do you have a small chicken door for the birds to go into the hen house through? If not, consider putting one in, that way, when frightened or in need of hiding, they'll have a secure place to go. Also...they can go in when the weather turns bad. If you're gone from home and it begins to rain, they'd be stuck out in the rain for hours. A small door, or a small exterior shelter will solve that.

Very nice! I love those nesting boxes.......just awesome!

Thanks Brian, I guess when I said I was just about done, I should have also said what I had left to do.

The top 2x4 will have several more added level a couple of feet apart to support wire hog panels. I will secure the panels but allow one to be "hinged" so that I can get in there if I need to. Added height would have been nice and I did want to buy 4' wire, but the nice lady at TSC said I wouldn't need it any higher.

The coops are different widths ( 4' and 5") and joined flush along the back which allows one foot of area for a chicken access door. It will be to the left of the big coop in the picture.

Chickflick, you come on over to the jobsite anytime we have extra scrap lumber.....I normally just have a dumpster or I bring some home for a fire in the evenings around the firepit.

Thanks again folks for the nice comments and mostly for looking.

thats a nice set up. What kind of chickens are those in the front? the red ones with a little white mixed in? I have 3 that look just like that and was told they are brown star, but cant find anything anywhere on brownstars.

That is really cute. I don't blame you for using scraps, if you look at our coop you will find a whole lot of scraps nailed together. I call it "being conservative".
