Today I checked on the chicks and one was dead. :( It wasn't even one of the sickest that was mentioned on my previous post. It was one of the other ones - sneezing, but not like the worst one. She was very active with clear eyes. So what happened? The other sneezing chick was doing better, so I thought the problem was on it's way to conclusion. This was totally not expected. I had a thought - back when we first got her (about two weeks ago) our dog got a hold of her. It was just for a second (my little brother decided it would be a good idea to put her on the floor next to the dog. *sigh*.)She had no obvious injuries and was fine the rest of the day and all days since. Could that have done something? Seems weird since it's been so long.

Any thoughts?

I don't know why but I'm sorry that it did happen! Good Luck with the rest! Sounds like you have it under control now! Welcome to BYC! :)

If your chick have a wet nose you have them to close to a draft
or someone could be smoking around them

Here try this feed them a hard boiled egg per 10 chicks twice
a day for a week as this is their natural medicine and keep them
warm and make everyone leave them alone till they are bigger
and always was your hands before and after handling chicks

p.s. to ganders excellent post ~ Wash your hands BEFORE and AFTER handling chicks. Seems silly but it is VERY important. I send this as a reminder to my self also.

Oh Dee Dee 2, you are so correct about the washing of the hands before and after handling chickens or chicks and most people ether forget or don't even think about it

Yes ! on the hand washing ! And I m so guilty of being in the barn yard, 'dirty hands' , Cuddles runs up wanting to be held, jumping up and down till I pick her up ~ so I do, dirty hands and all. Starting today I am putting 2 bottles of hand sanatizer at the barn and coop. Saw some big bottles at the $1.oo store ~ pretty cheap insurance. How is your little sick chicken ?

Better then before. Still some sneezing, but not as bad. I've been putting a little garlic in their food and it seems to be helping. Except for the one chick that doesn't like to move (other then to eat and drink)... I keep thinking that it will die but it never does. It's one of the meat birds. I have no idea what it's problem is. It just sits there hunched up all day.

If it is one of them chickens I like to call Mc Donald's chickens
they really only move to eat and drink and that is why you are
sa-post-to prepare them at 12 to 16 weeks of age

And yes you just make sure they have feed 24-7
