My Chick has an Eye-Infection and I Don't Know What to Do!

Good luck & let us know what the vet prescribes....

I went to TSC today and they didn't have anything I could use :-( No terramycin ointment (tablets yes, but they're HUGE and would never be able to be dosed for a chick), Tylan 50 they had was also only in injectable form and would have been impossible to dose esp since I have no clue on Lefty's weight which can't be even close to the 7 pounds for 1ml. Everything else they had didn't sound or look familiar at all and nothing was prescribed for chicken use: cattle and swine use ONLY. :-( I did manage to find some eye infection medication called NFZ Puffer for cats and dogs and am considering using it. It's a powder you put in their eye and is .2% nitrofurazone. What do you all think, should I use it? I also found some poultry nutritional drench that I am going to add to his water. He actually seems even a bit less swollen today after his treatment again last night with saline and bacitracin but the eye still bugs out funny and is glassy. I wish I could get close enough to take a pic of what I mean but my camera stinke and anything wth lots of flash blinds the poor guy more.

Why not just order the Neo-Poly-Bac online? That's what it's specifically for--poultry eye infections--and it'll knock out the infection very quickly. I'd do it soon if I were you, before the infection gets so severe the eye goes permanently blind. That'd be terrible, esp since it's preventable...

Holly, because the pet med site says it requires a script when you go to check out. And any vet in this area would want to see him before prescribing anything which is out of the question. Don't have a ton for a vet bill for a chick.
The swelling has definetly gone down with just the saline and bacitracin but as I thought I said (maybe I thought it and didn't type it!) the eye is gray and glassy and rounded out, and I believe he is already 90% blind in that eye and has been since birth. He reacts to shadows on the side, but he def doesn't see GREAT things out of that eye and that's apparent when he turns his good eye to look at you for everything.
Getting ready to do his nightly cleaning. I think I am definetly going to hold off on trying the NFZ until I get more responses on it. If you know of some way I can get the Neo-Poly-Bac without a script, let me know!!! Or if you have any ideas about terramycin ointment because I checked online for TSC and they only have is IN STORE, which obviously I found out today that the only one within 3 hours of me doesn't carry it. I guess if worse comes to worse I could ask them to order it in for me but they may make me order a whole lot or something...

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum, although i have been enjoying everyones tips for a week or so now.
I'm actually having a bit of a problem with one of my new chicks, and i haven't been doing this for very long so i'm not sure what to do...
The smallest chick out of the bunch had an eye problem when it arrived, and i've been trying to flush it clean everyday with saline solution, but mumma hasn't been much help in letting me do so =P I finally managed to catch the little guy/girl today, and her eye has gotten dramatically worse in a day or so.
This is what it's eye looked like a day or so ago, but now it seems to be completely covered by a layer. So i'm completely at a loss as to what to do! I'd appreciate any help and tips you guys can give me. Thankyou!

One of DHs bantams had an eye that looked like that. I flushed it with saline twice a day, wiped the gook off with a cotton swab, and applied terramycin eye ointment. It was healed in about a week. There were a few times I almost gave up because it got worse instead of better.

Anyway, that's all I have to contribute. I think the terramycin was like 7 bucks a tube.

Nyrial where did you get the Terramycin?
He/she is doing better I think. I had stopped playing with it everyday and just did the saline flush and the NFZ that I found at TSC every other day. It did get worse at first or so it seemed, but then it seemd to get better. IT was still clouded over but didn't seem as swollen and he actually seemed to see some shadows out of it. After I deemed it good enough that it wasnt red or anything noticable I put him in with the other chicks because he seemed very listless until he was with the other chicks site. I then continued to do just the saline flush and haven't even done that in a few days as I have worked the last 3 days 17 hours and not had time for ANYTHING. And it still looks swollen a bit, but not red, and actually one day last week I got some gook out of it and now it doesnt even really look cloudy. I still don't think he actually "sees" out of it, but seems to be looking much better.
AmyBella, thanks for the site! I will probably get it for future use if I can't find the terramycin ointment. I do hope to post picstures sometime soon! Lol

Just the local co-op/feed store.

Here's what his Japanese's eye looked like. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c230/Nyrial/100_0288.jpg

I'm
linking it so as not to hijack the information others might give you. You can see why I say it looks similar though.

If you don't mind paying shipping, or if none of your local feed stores/vets carry it.

Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment...I've looked at probably a dozen sites online and every one of them states that terramycin is on backorder/indefiinite-backorder. Anybody know what's going on with it? Taken off the market? Recalled? Replaced by something else?
