My chicken ate a baby bird

Shalom H!
To keep a population in an equilibrium (= the same more or less population density )only 2 from ALL OFFSPRING of a single feamale have to reach adulthood, so the situation you have described is quite common.......

Shalom back at you, Benny! Are you and your family doing well?

AND those 2 offspring must then be able to produce 2 adult offspring... Still, doesn't make me happy! The crows do chase off the hawks, which is a good thing. Yes... equilibrium is sometimes brutal to watch.

I have watched our hens kill mice, snakes, lizards, and frogs! We call them dinosaurs and my hubby calls our roo a "raptor"! I have always had the feeling that birds were descendants of dinosaurs, even in Jr high when I used a Thanksgiving turkey carcass to build a Tyrannosaurs Rex for a science project. Most all the bones matched up and I made the ones that were absent! I was laughed at 50 years ago but I feel very vindicated now! :)
A lot of geniuses or laughed at before it was realize that they were genius

Yeah, the title says it all. :th

I was outside with them, watering my garden. A baby chickadee fell from the tree. Before I even knew what was happening the chickens descended upon it. I saw a blur of white as they fought over it, then it was gone. :sick

The only reason I even know what it was is that the parent chickadees were attacking the chickens. There was also another baby in the tree above them, that was also out of the nest. The parents were feeding it.

I am assuming the chickens will be fine, but I feel sorry for the poor chickadees.

Toads, mice, grasshoppers all part of Mother Nature’s plan I guess. I used to be over run but no more. My Judy-girl ate not one but two of the biggest catapillers I have ever seen yesterday I don’t know how she got them down! Free protein!! A chicken gotta do what a chicken gotta do.

Yep mine eat of course Catapillar‘s and worms but seen them several times running around with baby snakes and small lizards. It does make me sad that they eat a lot of the baby frogs we have around. Luckily the purple frog that I am so intrigued by stays in my garden. I think he It’s just smarter than the chickens and knows they can’t get in there

My ducks are the worst at eating everything else smaller than them: toads, mice, baby birds and they love the sparrow that stays on the ground for too long. I was HORRIFIED the first time i saw them eating another bird. It was truly disgusting but, I totally appriciate the whole flocks ability to keep the mice away far better than any of our lazy cats.

Yes thanks, we are trying to extract the best from each day! Hopping that you and yours are on the bright and sunny side of life! :frow

Those cat should be careful! With this attitude they can be easily on the menu....!

So sorry! It's traumatic for us to see our sweet chickies eat other cute little critters. One of mine was running around with a small frog a couple of days ago. Got it away from her, but oi was decapitated and dead already. She was so upset when I took it away. She was the envy of the whole flock, being chased this way and that because she had a something very special.
My granddaughter used to catch toads and throw them to the chickens. I tried to tell her it was cruel but you know how little kids are. They would chase each other around for the frog for 10-15 mins. The granddaughter called it "Frog Football " for chickens!
