My chicken didn't come home till dawn?

When i did this and they learned to go inside, i think its just the matter that, the coop is there home so they need to learn that is a safe haven at night. i know what i did might of sounded mean, but they had to learn some how right?

I suspect HorseFeatherz is right, we thought we'd lost one of our girls to a predator, we've got about 4 acres and we searched high and low looking for a carcass or signs of a struggle but found nothing, we put it down to an eagle and then about four weeks later she showed up with six chicks in tow as if she'd just come out the coop, she then took the chicks to the coop every night.. We still have no idea where she had been but she kept well out of sight and none of the other chickens seemed to notice her absence either, or maybe they were just keeping quiet about it.
