Sugar, my silkie chicken, is 8 months old, and weighs a bit more than 1kg. 5 days ago, she jumped from my hand while I was carrying her, falling about 2 feet onto grass, but landing awkwardly, kicking a toe sized hole into the ground. For the next 2 days, she had a slight limp, but this progressed into constantly stumbling until she gives up trying to stand. Now she can only sit comfortably of I arrange her legs before placing her on the ground. She tries to sit with her right leg completely straightened, but I'm not sure she should be doing it. Sometimes she sits doing scissor splits. Her leg isn't swollen, but she does have leg mites that I am treating. Her leg doesn't seem broken or fractured, as she doesn't react when I touch different parts of her leg, and that has me worried that it may potentially be nervous damage. She tries to straighten out her leg out, but when I pick her up to lay her on her back in my arms to check her out, her leg goes limp.
For the past 3 days, I have been giving her a 0.75ml dose of 300mg of aspirin suspended in 45ml of water, followed by a chaser of cow's milk. This gives her a 5mg dose of aspirin, twice a day. This is to help her focus on eating, as she wasn't eating beforehand.
I have been feeding her crumble for baby chicks, and mealworms to keep her healthy. I have been keeping her inside the house in a large cardboard box with half a foot of straw at the bottom at night, and take her outside to sit in the grass in a small fenced-off enclosure where she can see the other 2 chickens.
I can't take her to the vet until my next pay in 5 days, so I am doing my best for her until then. I hope I am doing everything right, as I really want to see Sugar walking again. It would make me very sad if she is never fixed. I will post pictures of her leg in a follow up post tomorrow, as she is now sleeping for the night.
