When I built the house and pen a couple of years ago, I added a few wheelbarrow loads of sand to the pen to help with drainage. It does the job well. Plus the ground slightly sloped away from the house. I added a few bags of sand this spring. Other than that, Ive never had do anything to the floor of the pen. The sand dries out quicker than pure dirt, helps with drainage from rain water, and just seems more clean to to me. I've been pleased with the results.

Really nice to hear, because our natural dirt is very sandy in the area where our coop/run will be...and I'm hoping to not have massive cleaning on my hands in the near future (once the chicks get out there)

That is a really nice coop and run. Looks very thought out. You have a nice location there as well.

I have three banties that are 3 1/2 wks old now and one of them is supposed to be a black cochin. I'd love for mine to end up looking like yours.

How soon can you tell if pullet or roo? He/she has started out with a tiny yellow single comb. Loves to fly around the brooder, very curious about everything, likes to roost or be up on anything, LOVES meal worms. So much more personality than the two silkies.

Thank you. I spent a fair amount of pre-planning before I built it. I hope you enjoy your cochin. I really enjoy them. They have great personalities, get along well with one another, and are very friendly toward their owners. As for your question, the hens will typically feather out sooner than roosters, whereas roosters will lag behind in feather growth. Roosters combs will start turning pink/red sooner, and hens combs will remain yellow longer.​
