VERY sorry for your loss!

Getting a state lab to do a necropsy on the bird would be helpful to you to determine exactly what happened so you can be on the lookout for it in the rest of the flock.

REFRIGERATE the bird if you're going to follow this route...

I agree on all points, but in urgent cases, we may not have the choice to get the float done in time. I hope they can and will get a fecal done as that will rule out some things!

This was in response to “they haven’t had a strong dewormer in a while.” Random application of dewormers is not good practice without testing..I wasn’t implying an immediate test was necessary, but it’s not a bad idea to test any fresh poop that could be found whether it’s from this one or a flockmate..at least then they’ll know for sure if there’s a problem..

I'm sorry to report Rona passed away in the night. I thought maybe she had food poisoning because I found a random dead sparrow in the yard. I got rid of it but looked like something has been eating it but I could be wrong. I'm sorry I couldn't help you Rona

So sorry for your loss. It isn't any consolation, really, but over the years I have had random and distressing deaths among my flock without affecting any other birds. During those times I did not have a necropsy, or I would perform a limited necropsy myself (depending on my emotional attachment to the bird). However as the years wear on, I have come to realize the best way for closure and ensuring flock safety is to do a necropsy. At all times I keep a chicken-sized box and freezer packs for shipment. I have the address and local number for the state necropsy lab. I am a strong advocate of this. While I have been lucky that whatever issues affected a single hen haven't affected others, I realize that one day my luck will run out.

It is very clear you loved your sweet Rona girl. I am so sorry you had to lose her.

I am so sorry. This same sort of random thing happened to Pistachio and I lost her. I know how much it hurts. RIP Rona.
