My chicken is eating its own eggs!

Oyster shells come all crushed up and ready to feed to the chickens. You can pour it into a pile on the ground in a dry protected corner, or pour it into a bowl, or even mix it with their feed.

Look through the coop pages for ideas on coops. Also, the pages will help you think through how you want your coop, since many people list what they like and don't like about their coops.

It is a mineral deficiency that starts them to doing it, and then they like the taste. When you use eggs, save the shells and bake them in the oven. crush them and feed them back to the hens. It also helps to put some warm water with a little apple cider vinegar in it. This gives them potassium and helps metabolize the calcium. My grandma always kept a pie pan in the oven just for egg shells. no need to have to buy oyster shells. You can also give them calcium by feeding them buttermilk with crumble mash. They love it. wet mash is easier to eat.

Taking a chicken "up into the mountains and letting her go" would be a cruel fate for her. Either a predator would make quick work of her, or she'd die of starvation or exposure. Make soup, give her away, or take her to an animal shelter, but don't abandon her in the wild.
