I agree that it's not always about food.....I have a little crested hen, and she LOVES to be picked up and petted....She walks around, and she sort of beeps....and she eyeballs you, then LOOKOUT! She will fly up onto your head or shoulder if you don't pay her the proper attention.
She loves her cuddle......

Here she is...The small one, next to the very large one:

Her name is Petite Miss. My big bear of a husband just loves her.....She's one of my oldest, dearest hens.

I just watched it....too funny! I think my chicken is a little less infatuated than that lol

I love how the goose flys alongside him on his scooter!

The most 'in love' I have seen my hens really act is when they squat when I speak

I don't mind that this hen does this... as long as I'm not messing with the pecking order. And no, I don't trust her not to peck at my eyes!!!

Heehee, congratulations on being a chicken scratching post. I would polish my comb on some soft warm skin if I had one! I bet it feels good.

Lots of people are of the opinion that chickens are incapable of affection and are just looking for food, but I think any highly social creature is capable of bonding with other creatures (otherwise they'd lose the survival benefit of being social). It's kind of the entire point of being a social animal that you LIKE to spend time with other critters.

I've seen many chickens that pair off, or spend all their time together. And I personally own a chicken that loves to sit on my knee and cluck at me for long periods. She doesn't get food for this behavior, she just really really likes to gossip at me, and only me. There's a possibility that I gossip right back.
