We just lost a chicken today and I am wondering if it is safe to eat the eggs. She had just layed an egg and died in her nesting box. I am worried that she may have had a disease that contaminated the other birds or their eggs. Do you think it is safe to consume the eggs?

Should I wait a few days and watch the flock?

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

The eggs should be safe to eat. If you are concerned, cooking the eggs will kill any pathogens.

Did the chicken who died eat any of the eggs? If so, don't. But seriously, it should be fine.

omg my hybrid of 1 year old has died a few weeks ago the exact same way and i ate her egg and my other chooks seem to be great

Do NOT eat those eggs, what if the hen got into some kind of substance that poisoned her...no amount of cooking will get rid of that, why chance it? toss the eggs. I wouldn't even give them to the dog or even compost them....they are inexpensive and you get new eggs each day!

sorry about the hen though, I hope all the others are doing fine.

After reading a lot of articles on the subject, I decided to deworm my chickens. They 4 birds that I have left seem happy and active today. I wonder if she had a heart attack while laying.
