Sunday night my OEGB hen got attacked by I believe my brahma hens. I found her in between the two cages outside halfway into the cage my brahmas were in. The back of her head and down her neck have skin missing. Right ear appears to be missing along eith part of the earlobe. I have so far added food, vitamin and electrolyte water, and blue koted the wound. I ran water over it this morning and sunday night. She is in my basement where there are no flies. Should I do anything else? The food appears to be untouched and same with the water. I forced some yogurt down and water. ETA- Should I inject tylan?

Tylan is not really appropriate for skin wounds. Pen G is the recommended med. I wouldn't use it unless she has an infection, though. Antibiotic usage carries its own risks that are often discounted in our rush to kill germs that may or may not be present.

Skip the electrolytes. They make the water taste funky and she might not be drinking it if she is not used to it. Plain water should do at the moment. Skip the strange foods, as well. If she is used to eating pellets then feed her pellets. Don't get unusual until she feels better. She is stressed out, in pain, away from her friends, all alone in a strange place with people constantly hovering around. She needs some normalcy in a world that has suddenly been turned on its ear.

Keep trying to get her to drink. At this point that is the most important thing. She is not going to waste away from lack of food, but she can die of dehydration. Other than trying to get some fluids into her- let her rest. She needs it. If she still isn't drinking on her own by tomorrow then the prognosis is not good. She probably won't make it. By letting her rest and recover from the stress of the attack, she may be in a better position to start drinking on her own. She stands a much better chance then.

Does she have mites or lice? If so then treat her with an insecticide and thoroughly clean her hospital cage.
