My chicken sang the egg song!

Deb can I would think you have 2 layers. Do any of them squat for y ou when you get close to them or go to pick them up? Any that have bigger or redder combs and wattles than the others?

The RIRed squats for me and she is the one I know for sure is laying. If I had to guess, it would be the hen that is similar to her that must be laying too. I will have to keep an eye out in the mornings to see.

They sure are fun and it's been fun learning more and more about them

got my first egg yesterday, but nothing today.... Come On Cinnamon... you can do it!!!

After a while you learn the difference between the egg song and the "ahhhh there's a predator" song. My three pullets became hens about 6 weeks ago and it seems like laying and squatting do indeed go together. Now they're skipping a day here and there but they make up for it by laying what look like normal size eggs but really are two tiny double yolkers.

I love the names of your girls. I noticed the food fetish, too, of the two who are laying. They also are the last to go in at night, seeming to scramble for the last bit of green for the day. When they squat I get to pet them, and the other day my 8 year old neighbor petted one, and he was surprised at how soft she was. On a personal note, is that an afghan in your picture? It's beautiful!

Josephine's nickname is now waddles, Jeanette my wheaten ameracuna is off her lay for the past month, her nickname is Pig. Missy is crybaby, she complains the most about food.

Josephine has the loudest egg song and only seems to lay every other day, while Missy & Bessie lay regularly, about 6/7 days. Now with Nell in on the action of getting greens in front of their enclosed run (predator issues).

Today I need to move coop #2, enclose the next run and stick my greyhounds in it and see if they can escape after 5 hours. Then if it is, let out my 26 x 5 week old straight run chicks. I am referring to them as a collective "itty bitty peep peeps".

I have completely lost my mind and chicken math rules my life. But my gardens look AMAZING and will only look better next year. The itty bitty peep peeps are 16 slw, 7 white leghorn and 3 br. Aww. But they are going to freezer camp, but the 3 br are so adorable, and I like the look of slw, so a couple might make their way into my laying flock instead of freezer camp.

I wanted to add french bcm to my laying flock, but can't seem to find any chicks (female). I want maroon eggs!

this is Josephine's giant egg next to Bessie's first egg, and yes, the giant egg was a double yolker!

I finally was able to see the other hen that was laying everyday. Now just to wait for my Nicki to start laying

We bought our hens the week before Easter. We figured they wouldn't be laying eggs till sometime in Sept. To our surprise we were wrong. We know one for sure that is laying and has been for about 3 weeks. Each morning I go out and I have 2 eggs waiting for me. Is it possible for one hen to be laying two eggs at a time?? Or I should assume that 2 of them are laying I just haven't seen which one it would be. The color of the eggs are both pretty much the same.

I have been around chickens most of my life.
I have never known any hen to lay more than one egg per day unless the lighting in their housing was artificially timed.
I have seen 4 eggs in 3 days ans 3 edges in 2 days using this technique, but only by larger producers.
That's why some of the barns(intensive farming techs) have to replace their hens every year.

When I first moved home from the city I built small coop(12Lx4Wx4H) out of scraps. It wasn't insulate and the door was apiece of canvas..
3 goats 8 ducks, 3 geese and 20 chickens stayed in there all winter. Well, they would venture out during the day.
I was afraid the cold would freeze the eggs so I put a cpl of 100watt bulbs in. With 24 hour light I was getting 12-18 eggs every day even from older hens. (The ducks and geese also produced.)
By warmer weather(no artificial lighting) I was down to 3 or 4 eggs per day. By mid summer everything was back to normal. Then broodies....

im new with the chicken raising but i do have 2 hens that are about 18 weeks now and no eggs yet. my other hens are about 3 to 4 weeks younger then them so i dont expect anything from them for awhile yet.
