My chicken sang the egg song!

5 eggs in 7 days I am impressed with my young Australorp at least 1 is the layer. I have 4 more that are 2 weeks younger. Cant wait. But I am worried she doesnt sit on the eggs all day will they hatch? Does she know what to do at this early stage?
I am assuming you have a rooster? Chickens will lay eggs without a rooster but in order for them to be fertile and potentially be hatched as chicks you must have a rooster to fertilize the eggs the hen lays. Poultry sex is not very pretty so be prepared (you can avert you eyes if necessary). As for sitting on the eggs, that is a part of a natural process that we humans will never understand. Unless the hen becomes broody (maternal) they will just lay the eggs and leave them for you to have for breakfast. I have read that Australorps do not tend to be a very broody breed (yet other sources say they are exceptional sitters and mothers) so you may never have a hen that becomes broody and sits on the eggs or you may never have eggs because all the hens are busy sitting on nests. If you are sure they are fertilized (you have a rooster that mates with the hens) and you want to hatch eggs you may want to also invest in an incubator.

I have a Rooster and he has been busy with all 5 hens. Guess I will have to keep watching the hens. I think I may have to get an incubator as well. Here is my rooster.

Beautiful ladies and gents :)

Josephine my clean faced ee laid this freak giant egg 2 days ago, then went back to normal size.

Only french bcm to track down. I don't have an incubator, so I'm looking for chicks. An incubator would set my chicken math off the charts lol.

Ocd- obsessive chicken disorder. I have it in spades. I suspect all of us do at this point. Lol

How old is your rooster? He has an awfully small comb and tail feathers for a rooster. Looks more like a hen but if you have seen him being "busy with all 5 hens" he must be a he.

I have a 4 month old chicken that I thought was a hen. Today is her birthday and she decided to celebrate by having a go at my barred rock. I have never seen chickens mate. I'm new to this but it sure looked like that's what she is doing. Can hens imitate roosters. I have not heard her make rooster noises but I haven't necessarily ever heard her make any noise when I think of about it. I guess I will google chicken sex so I can make sure. They will have it for sure.

Can you post a picture of the chicken? Hens will "mate" with other hens as a dominance thing but it is not usual. Probably you have a rooster that is young and not making all the moves that roosters usually do. Chicken sex is not the most attractive thing to see but it is at least less violent than duck sex.

If you look under my sssharon profile it has a picture of my 3 chicks. The white one is the culprit. The BR didn't even run to get away. It was funny because the white was in my potatoes and kind of looking like a cat when it's stalking. I figured it was going to go and pick a fight with the BR{ Roxanne}
because she was close by and instead Pearl the white one jumped right on top of my BR and started pumping away. I was totally surprised and there was no complaining by anyone, only me. ahahaha I have seen Pearl try to pick fights before so that was what I expected.

Awww man the wait is killing me. I heard someone's egg song yesterday morning but not sure who. My RIR was sort of chatty today which is so unusual, I don't think I ever hear anything from her. And I think she may have squatted for me today but it wasn't full on like my BA does for me.

so strange because I've been waiting on my BR to squat for me because her comb and wattles are big and red

and my EE because her comb all of a sudden got a bit bigger and reddened

.
Guess it's a guessing game who will lay next now. So far we only have my BA laying for the past 3 weeks. They are all 21 weeks now. I wonder if I will know who laid it. Aside from actually watching a chicken lay her egg and looking up what color egg I'd get from what breed are there any ways to know for sure who laid the egg? But seriously the waiting is killing me.
