I work the night shift and usually get home around 8am when I get off. Each morning I walk around the house to the temporary chicken coop (old dog pen) and let my birds free range for a little while before I go to bed for the day. They always run to the same bush when I open the door. This morning I put my phone on the ground to record the chickens running from the pen. Here is the video for your enjoyment.

Very cute! They almost look like they knew your camera was there. How do you get them back in the pen at night? Or do they just go to bed on their own when it starts to get dark?

They will usually free range for about an hour and then go back into the pen to sit in the shade and get some water. Those that don't return to the pen can usually be encouraged to return to the pen with a scoopful of scratch or a few mealworms.

I work a 7on/7off schedule, which means I work 7pm to 7am Wednesday through the following Tuesday and then I'm off for the next 7 days. So during my 7 days working, they only get to free range for about an hour each morning. On my days off they stay out all day if I'm around the house.

omg thats such a great video! my almost 5 week old chicks do the same thing when i let them out of their pen for a little while into the larger run... they flap around and try to fly like they've never been out before lol... its the cutest thing but usually i have to open the door and then move quickly so i dont get hit by a flying chicken

Look at 'em charge the camera!

Get it!
Eat it!
Wait, it's not moving!
Run for your life!

The white meat birds don't rush about do they? I laughed out loud when I saw the rooster do a wing dance around the hen. She's like, Don't bother me, Dude.

That was fun to watch!

This made me and my husband smile. It was kinda peaceful watching them burst out and run around. Life is good.
