[This morning, I found my precious Chloe outside the fenced chicken yard. She is a three month old Blue Andelusian (actually black). She has been attacked by I don't know what. The damage is mainly to her head and neck. She is alive, but shocky. I have her in the house in a basket, but do not know what to do with such wounds. How should I treat? Should I just put her down? Is there a chance for her? Please see pics. What could have done this??

So sorry this has happened. Try to clean up the wounds with some sterile water. Have you got some neosporin or triple antibiotic cream you can use? Just keep her calm and quiet. Try to make sure she will eat and drink a little. Some chopped up boiled egg is always good. Time will tell if she will be OK, she will likely be in shock for some time..

I like to use Betadyne solution to rinse, and clean the wounds with. Just squirt, and it doesn't burn them. Then gently put neosporin all over the wounds. Reapply several times a day. The missing skin will regranulate, but you don't want infection setting in. She will be shocky for a day or two. Keep feed, and water where she can get to it, and keep her warm. You can try enticing her to eat some scrambled egg, to help get her interested in eating.

She is standing on her own. Her eyes are open. I washed out the wounds with Vetericyn plus and tried to give her some water with nutri-drench per syringe. She opened her mouth and took some, but I am always afraid of aspiration, so I will do more a little later. I have her in the dog carrier and will watch her closely. Thanks for the support.

Thanks. Still a puzzle.About 3:30 am, the dogs started barking outside. I went out to check on things and they were ok. I locked the dogs in the house so the neighbors would not call the cops for barking dog. At 0700, I took the dogs out to go the bathroom. There was Chloe- not in the chicken yard. I have a 6 ft privacy fence around the yard and a 4 ft wire fence around the chicken yard. A couple of weeks ago, I trimmed their wing so they could not fly over the fence. It was 32 degrees last night. Whatever got her dropped her outside the wire fence, but did not get to eat her. It had to be about daylight because with that cold, she would not have lasted long being in shock. An early hawk? A late owl? A cat? I don't know.I think a cat would have gone for the innards instead of the head- sort of think it was an owl- but why did it drop her? Maybe we scared it off with the commotion of getting the dogs outside. Anyway, I locked the coop and will let them out in the morning when it is safe.
