Hi, I have a young hen who was found not moving in my coop she if very lethargic dosnt move at all, but she will eat and drink with assistance; open her eyes and raise her head, her crop dose empty I belive but I will be double checking that tomorrow. She has still been able to lay eggs and poop be it diarrhea but she dosnt poop often. It started yesterday but three days ago something happened to her I found her screeching flapping, back flipping, her head swiveling, she also was resting her head on her back for a little while and alot of feathers everywhere but a few hours after that she was fine and a few days after she was looking fine eating and drinking but then it escalated into her being as she is now. Also she can't keep her heap up.

What is your location in the world? Could she have been injured? She sounds as if she is having neurological symptoms or wry neck. Was she vaccinated for Mareks or any other diseases? Can you check your feed to make sure there is no mild in there? Also, could she have gotten into something in the yard, possibly a dead animal or fish?

Those symptoms could point to an avian virus that produces tumors. A tumor in the brain could cause not only paralysis, but seizures.

This isn't the only cause. Dehydration, toxic poisoning, and vitamin deficiencies could cause such symptoms.

A few of those you can try to treat and see if it helps. For dehydration, give Gatoraid or electrolytes in some form. You can try treating her with vitamin E and selenium to see if this might be a vitamin deficiency.

Unfortunately, toxic poisoning would be untreatable by this time, but you should investigate possible sources so other chickens won't get poisoned. Look for poison plants, leaky machinery spilling oil or hydraulic fluid onto the soil. Try to recall if someone had flushed a radiator or cleaned paint brushes recently where this chicken may have been scratching around.

I'm in Southern California and I looked into wry neck and it didn't completely match. Also I checked the feed I have (I have 8 hens 1 roo) there is no mold. From this post and another one we may think some one may have thrown something in my yard and she ate it. Maybe.

Update: she's up and eating now but have trouble walking around and her poops are big and REEK. Will continue to monitor
