For us up here in Michigan, it is the point in time when we are pretty sure we aren't going to have any more hard frosts anymore! Memorial weekend is when a lot of people plant, but it really depends on the weather and if it is dry enough.

Are there a few Hamburgs in there? lol
Big difference between the Hamburgs and the Lakenvelders here. So happy that the Lakenvelders went outside and the Hamburgs were moved to the back brooder.

My chix are always jumpy in my stock tank brooder. But when I move them to the brooder that is made of hardware cloth or the play pen, they calm down.

My girls calmed down once I put them outside; before then they lived in my kitchen and got to come out and play every night in the kitchen for a few hours. They started getting crazier as they got bigger.

Are these your first chicks or are they more active than other chickens you have had?

I have had three batches of young ones & think that they just tend to be wack-a-do between 5-10 weeks. They're alot of fun to watch.

These are my 4th or 5th brood of layer type chickens. This is the first time raising "exotic" breeds. My old layers are just staring at these little punks and shaking their heads!

The reason why I moved them out of the brooder was because they are so nuts that they have managed to break 2 heat lamp bulbs in the last week! All they do is run around. They should have strong legs!

I was going to post about the same thing! We moved our 4 week olds into the coop yesterday. Their brooder is a big cardboard box so we put that in the middle with the heat lamp and cut a couple of doors into the box. They are presently flapping, running, raving, jumping on each other and all over the whole coop. Its a riot to watch. When they get worn out they pass out in the box. The silkies tend to be more quiet, the EE's are working on pecking order and do more landing on each other, the orps just do their thing and like to be pet and the polish keep trying to fly up to the top roosts.

So everyone thinks that while this may be a problem nobody can really say why they are more wired than other broods I have had in the past.

I was assuming it was the breeds.
