my chickens are making a small hole in the egg and breaking the yolk but not eating them why

I would suggest putting fake eggs in the nesting boxes. Collect the fresh eggs as early as possible, leaving the fake ones. Once they realize that they can’t break them anymore, they will give up trying....

Or modify the nests as roll-away nests to immediately conceal the egg so the hens can't access it.

Are these new layers?
Curiosity pecking is not unusual with new layers.
How long have you had these birds?
What all and exactly how are you feeding?
Fake eggs can help.
Roll away nests are almost fool proof.

chickens are 2 to 3 yrs old been laying good , have layer feed pellets all day access. I put up curtains and it seems to help. they are not eating them just putting a pencil size hole in them and breaking the yoke. will make roll away nest.
