My Chickens are not Pets!

Oh dear,
Now I too have thought the same thing at times.. The money people spend on their pets, could go to better use IMO.. Also again IMO I do feel some may hide from deeper relationship or social issues in the form of "over loving" a pet......
BUT BUT BUT.... Don't ya think you are being a bit judgmental?

Really to each his or her own... And Yes I think chickens make great pets.. I have a pet chicken or two I would never eat. So soft and they always smell good! Chickens make fine pets. I like birds! And chickens are king of birds they make great pets, make eggs, and make a meal if one chooses.

My spirituality does not allow me the arrogance of assuming humans are some how higher beings, just because our brains allow us to be talked into believing just about any thing. Just look at our history look at the present look what we do and have done to our fellow mankind. The hideous atrocities of "righteous" holy wars, people like Hitler, the countless ethnic cleansings our species has done to each other in our short history. It is my humble opinion that assuming all life on this planet is only here to serve us is a slippery slope...Which leads us to the dark deeds our species is so capable of justifying in our minds..

With that said, I am an omnivore, so I am burdened with the task of having to take the soul of other creatures to sustain myself and my family. I do so with respect and sorrow.. But after all I am just another flesh and blood creature critter here on earth.

There are so many people who struggle with social anxiety, panic disorders, etc (yes, some of this is the voice of experience) - animals are a great source of friendship, a reason to get up in the morning - little lives dependent on you. They may not cook me breakfast, but they provide it. I think it is shortchanging the value of a life, no matter how "small", to say its sole purpose is for you to eat it.

My family does the whole hunting fishing thing - growing up we raised our own beef but my dad got tired of it. Want to eat your chickens? Great, dispatch them humanely and enjoy some for me! But please don't belittle my feelings or thoughts about my animals - you don't know from what kind of hurt I am coming from.

I started this and then deleted and then started it again... it needs to be said... we are all different people and sometimes we just need to agree to disagree... to you who raise your birds to be food, eat well... to you who raise your birds as pets, snuggle, pet and enjoy... to you who can do both, good for you. I'm not telling you where I stand because, as enjoyable as you all are here on BYC, I really don't care what you think of me... no offense, I just don't really know you. My family loves me, my friends love me, my pets respond wonderfully to me and make me happy and I eat well and eat everything! Life is hard, but God is good! Blessings to you all.

BUT BUT BUT.... Don't ya think you are being a bit judgmental?

Nah...

Not judging anyone, just making suggestions and observations~if they hit close to home for you it may feel like judgement.

I have pets too...I really enjoy them. I really enjoy having chickens and there aren't many that have backyard chickens here in this rural community. People actually make fun of me over my birds....and get especially mean when you mention you eat your chickens. It gets a little old. There are two sides to every coin, so I just showed you the flip side.

I DO get a little exasperated when I see all the mean things people say here on BYC~and in my own workplace~ to other humans and in the next breath can be so very tender and loving over a bird. I guess it just doesn't make much sense to me. I struggle to understand it, thus the observations and suggestions.

Its just a little disconcerting to hear so much love expressed about birds, so much money spent on birds, so much anxiety over birds...when there are far more deserving things in this world for that attention. Children, old folks, sick people, lonely people, hurt people....so many need. I guess I feel its sad that so many chickens have better homes than some folks, better food, more love and attention.

But you are certainly right...to each his own.

We are all using the chickens....just each for his/her own purpose.

Your observations are not scientific so they actually are judgmental as they point to an undefinable conclusion. Its easy to do and it happens all the time--even I do it.

As for me, I am just as compassionate--even empathic--to humans, animals and chickens. I don't put dresses on my dog (she does have a holiday collar though

) and I do see it a bit excessive but if it makes them happy it is a harmless way to be happy. Some people rather smoke cigarettes, abuse drugs, eat too much ice cream, donuts and sugary foods, drink too much alcohol all to feel better. So if buying a cute doggie coat for Fido makes someone happy is it really so bad? People who are grumpy or mean to others may have been hurt by other people. Animals rarely hurt if they are being treated lovingly--people however, can be. This may be why their compassion is geared more toward the innocent animals and not other humans. Its a sad fact that us intelligent humans can be pretty mean to those around us.

Your observations are not scientific so they actually are judgmental

Actually, calling my observations judgemental could be called judgemental....so I guess we are all a little hypocritical? As your calling them judgemental was not derived under scientifically controlled studies, that would make them doubly judgemental.

C'mon, folks...its a chicken forum...we are discussing and debating an issue, not drawing lines in the sand.

That is exactly the point! Both of us were judgmental which is why I said I do it too. Wasn't intended to annoy anyone--I apologize if I did.

The entire line:
