My Chickens are not Pets!

Quote:
I don't do the clothes for pets either- though my hairless cat would benefit from a t-shirt, he refuses to wear one. I think the doggie strollers are a disgrace to the dogs- it isnt really a 'walk' if the dog isnt walking, lol.
Cigarettes, gambling casinos, sporting events- my friend just spent $1700 dollars on season tickets for the football home games here..PURSES! I saw a purse that looked nice at a store the other day, and I walked over-looked at the price tag-$270!!! Nothing is that cute- walked away. My pit bull would chew the handle off an expensive purse just like he does a cheap one, lol.
People spend money on frivolous things all the time, and people suffer. On the news this morning was a story of a man who, living in Detroit, was robbed, shot, and ran over all because the theives wanted his $2500 sunglasses. What? But we live in a nation of excess and waste. How can we play a ball player millions of dollars when the ones that save lives or teach our children make such a small amount in comparison? How can we pay entertainers so much money, sports icons so much money, then show commercials begging for money to help feed the poorest of the poor in another country when people here in this country are homeless, hungry, and dying? I don't know, but it happens. The money I spend to feed my pets is much cheaper than my prescription drugs would be for stress-related illnesses- I feed them and care for them, and they, in their own way, give me comfort and a way to relax.
My eighty four year old mother in law is in poor health, but she states her animals give her a reason to get out of bed each day.

Those that kill their own food have my respect-my husband hunts, my brother-in-law raises my pork and beef..and I am thankful that I can enjoy my animals as pets and have someone else do the 'dirty' work for me. I dont think that people who raise their own food should be looked down upon or ridiculed, shunned, etc- I just don't know why owning them as pets doesnt get the same respect.

Update on my "Little Livestock":
MY BIRDS HAVE GOTTEN MEAN!!! **waah, waah, waah**
**ducks4you KNOWS that they aren't handled, but, gee wizz, my 1,200 pound gelding treats me better!!**
I KNOW that I don't handle them, but today I felt pity on the bottom bird (They are RIR's), who was chased away from the millet treats, and hand fed her a stalk of millet from the patches I grew for them, and she ate a little, then pecked me. Then, when I brought in some crumbles for their bowl--which WASN'T empty--and same bird tried to chase me out!!
It's DEFINITELY time to consider replacements. I'd like bigger eggs, but I wasn't going to complain to the flock. Their egg laying is slower than it was last Fall, too. Should I consider another breed?
Since they're not the friendlist it does make it easier to butcher them.? What do YOU think I should do, with the understanding that THIS group will go to freezer camp as soon as the chicks I'm going to get start laying?

As I read all these posts about chickens being pets and people (the women bother me especially) can't cull their own chickens, I can't help but be annoyed, I didn't grow up on a farm, although I'm very active in FFA (yeah i'm still in high school haha) but my grandfather has a farm, and I've always been taught that animals are food. I admire the beauty of nature, I respect it because it feeds me. I hunt, I fish, I've slaughtered animals. I have no problem doing all of these things myself. And I know I'm ranting here, but I just can't help but say how much I can't stand girls who or even men who freak out at the thought of killing an animal. But love to dress them up or build them mansions. Sorry for anyone I offended but raising chickens is farming, I don't believe they should be "hobbies".

We just started on our chicken journey. However last thanksgiving we bought a pasture raised turkey for thanksgiving. we went to the farm a week before processing to visit our turkey. I explained to both my girls (3&4 at the time) that one of those turkeys out in the field would be our dinner. They then had a long discussion and decided which turkey would be our dinner. I want them to realize that meat comes from animals not vacuum sealed in plastic.

The day we got our 4 new chickens we had another discussion that the chickens would be for eggs, however once they stop laying they will become dinner. My oldest said that was a great idea and said that big bertha would probably be the tastiest so we should eat her first.

As a general rule my chickens are food, not pets. Lilly is my exception. My very elderly grandfather recently gave her to me. She was his last hen. She is 10 years old. He (my grandpa) has never really been involved with mine or my siblings lives, but his health has been declining recently and he's realized he won't be around much longer. He knows I love chickens and gave her to me. I will keep her until she dies, whether she lays or not.

My spirituality does not allow me the arrogance of assuming humans are some how higher beings, just because our brains allow us to be talked into believing just about any thing. Just look at our history look at the present look what we do and have done to our fellow mankind. The hideous atrocities of "righteous" holy wars, people like Hitler, the countless ethnic cleansings our species has done to each other in our short history. It is my humble opinion that assuming all life on this planet is only here to serve us is a slippery slope...Which leads us to the dark deeds our species is so capable of justifying in our minds..

With that said, I am an omnivore, so I am burdened with the task of having to take the soul of other creatures to sustain myself and my family. I do so with respect and sorrow.. But after all I am just another flesh and blood creature critter here on earth.
