Yes, the kitten food has more protein than chick starter--but chick starter can be fed as the sole ration, while the kitten food should only be a supplement, so the total protein in the diet might be equal.

Good point, in my head the OP was just throwing a handful of kitten food out as treats beside the regular feed.

Chick starter is fine to feed to any age chicken, and can be a very good choice when they're molting (baby chicks have to grow lots of feathers, too.)

While I definitely agree there is one thing....
The OP is using feed from a local mill. They do produce a really nice product but the chick starter is very very fine and may pose issues for adults to easily eat it.
I use that same starter feed when I get new chicks.
