My chickens have mites

400

Does anyone have an idea what this is? 2 of my neighbors chickens have died with this on their legs...

I'm using garden & poultry dust permethrin 0.25% to dust their mites. Is this something I'll always have to do?

Unfortunately, I do. It's a good idea to switch products to avoid resistance. I switch between Sevin dust and Permethrin dust/spray. (The spray is SO much easier but not good to spray liquid on them in winter. lol) When we're on it, which means checking them every week, we can go a few checks without seeing a mite! In reality, I usually get around to checking them all once a month or so.

Our roosters tend to be hardest hit. I started using Frontline spray on them last year and it took care of their mites. It's not approved or safe, so I don't use it on laying hens or any chicken we may eat - just the keeper roosters that will be around for a few years and we know to not eat them. I do think getting the rooster mites under control helps considerably with the hens.
