When we butchered mean roosters we hung the upside down tied to a fence poste and cut the main blood vain in their neck, then they would bleed to death. But the a multiple ways to cull a bird. How ever you do it @Katie98 do it in respect of the bird. I'm so so sorry you have to do this. How out is your chicken? She had a good life with you and she was probably a good friend. :hugs :hugs😭

She's less then a year old and she was... her and her sister cinnamon liked climbing the tree I climbed as a kid and liked exploring a lot more then the other chickens.. we gave cinnamon to a farmer friend so she could be free

I’m glad you were able to give Cinnamon a new home with a friend, where she can be happy, though I’m sure she misses you, your family and Corn Chip. And I’m very sorry again about Corn Chip. She sounds like a wonderful pet.

Since you have a farmer friend, would he or she be able to humanely cull (put down) Corn Chip? Or do you have a trusted adult that could do that? This is never an easy decision to make, but you can always remember how wonderful Corn Chip was and all the memories you have with her.

Many of us here on BYC have had to make a tough decision like this, and it is never easy. I am very sorry, keep us posted on the situation. ❤

Katie98, I find it so kind that you have so much love for your corn chip. You and your family will have to decide rather soon on what the best choice for corn chip is. The longer the wait, can also be harder for you all and especially corn chip. If a vet is not an option than you and your family need to decide what will be fair for corn chip. Keep in mind how corn chip feels and making the right decision can also be the hardest a chicken owner can make.

you are 13 years old? oh sweetie, what a horrible thing you are having to go though here. Such a hard dose of reality of pet owning. I really feel for you. Will your mum help you contact the farmer friend to ask for his help?

her leg to her hip is ripped off but the bone is still there and there's a green spot on her hip to chest area we've been doing as much research as we can her leg was gone after day 1 but now rotting and there's maggots we used hydrogen peroxide and washed her leg with water and I thought we got most of the maggots off of her but they still a whole infestation on it we started cutting some feathers off from the area so it would be easier to see my mom saying the maggots are good cuz that means they're eating the dead skin off of her but it's still nasty smelly to see her leg like this she's barely eating or drinking is sleeping a lot more than she usually does
Thank u I'm scared if the maggots are helping us or not to
@Katie98 You and your Mom bought some products to take care of the wound. Can you tell us what you have on hand?

The maggots will damage the skin and cause infection. It's very important to get rid of the maggots. Infection and maggots is why she smells bad.

Fill up a dish pan with warm soapy water (you can use original Dawn). Place your hen's legs in the water and wash really well, try to get all the maggots off that you can. Look under her wings as well - if she has injuries further up, she may have maggots there too.
Flush those wounds out really well - that brown stuff is "yuck", rinse that off or use a cloth to wipe it away.
Trim the feathers away from the wounds and take some photos so we can see the damage.

If you still find maggots after the cleaning up, then pick them off with tweezers. Dry her well.
Depending on what you have on hand - I would swab the wounds with Chlorhexidine or Betadine or other anti-septic. I would not use the Peroxide any more. Apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wounds.

The foot, I would leave alone at the moment. The skin looks like it's drying up, likely she's going to lose some more toes.
Place her on clean dry bedding. You can use puppy pads if you have them.

She's going down quickly due to infection. Give her a bit of sugar water to help perk her up. If you have poultry vitamins, those would be good.
To give her a fighting chance, I would really recommend antibiotics. Check with your local feed store like Tractor Supply - some of them carry Amoxicillin, if your's had that, then get the Amoxicillin. If not, then get some Procaine Penicillin G (it's in the refrigerated section) along with syringes in 20gauge needles. (dosing for both below)

Amoxcillin dose is 57 mg per pound of weight given orally twice a day for 7 days.

Procaine Penicillin G dosie is 1/2 ml injected into the breast muscle once a day for 5-7 days. Alternate sides every day.

Let us know how she's doing.

Thank u where thinking about taking her to are framer friend because her whole leg has to go but she's still active I'll try to do the suger water thing but where seeing how to kill off all the maggots like *vinegar like and salt? Where going to do vinegar only on the parts she dosent feel anymore I'll pick out the maggots we bought stuff to do so I really want her to live and even if I have to help her 24/7 I'm ok with that I was always caring her around anyways

Hydrogen peroxide is not good to continually use. It will keep the wound moist and can help infection grow in the end. Id soak the leg like the other person said. Warm water and salt will help draw out the infection. The area needs to be able to dry out as well. I know its confusing but maybe your mom will understand. The other person is right about antibiotics. I just don't see a chance without them and trust me the maggots need to be gotten rid of. Ive treated many human wounds and ive delt with maggots. It isn't a good thing.
