Cackle I live in n.c. and I have planted catalope and watermelon aplenty and if you are close by I will give you some for your girls. Mine go spastic for cantalope and I havent given them watermelon yet but I am sure they will tear it up. My wife had bought a cantalope at the farmers market by the hospital where she works and I gave them a big slice and it was gone in 2 minutes. Let me know where in n.c. you are and I will try to get you some when it is harvest time. I planted 2 cantalope and 7 watermelon which is more than enough for the wife and I to eat on and the chicks to snack on. P.S. our garden is all organic, just cow poo compost. Also put a left over piece of corn on the cob in the run and it was like watch out for the fingers.
I bought a large cantaloupe the other day and took a few cut up pieces out to the coop. Once they had a taste they instantly went into a frenzy. They get more excited when they see cantaloupe than they do mealworms (those that feed their flock mealworms know how excited they get for those treats).
My first time having chickens and have looked up lots and I mean LOTS of stuff. One is the fruits they like, watermelon and strawberries were top with cantaloupe. I have tried watermelon and strawberries and my chickens looked at me like I was nuts so now I am going to try the cantaloupe. Did all of your chicks like it right off the bat or was it a little taste here and there for them?
