My poor girl Lily has died on saturday, found her "sleeping" in a bush. She looked peaceful and her eyes were closed, head resting on the grass. She has had a happy life, was loved by many people. I recently had a little funeral, quite a bit of my friends came. They wrote their own speeches , which was nice. Everyone loved her very very much and was sad to see her go. I had some lilies and irises to put where she was buried. We played some soft music through the whole thing. Does anyone have their own story of a chicken passing? Would you like to reply with the story?

I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds as if Lily had a wonderful life with you, loved by so many people. I've had chicken burials for the ones that have left me, yes... even the tiny chicks that passed got their own private goodbye. Some of the funerals were attended by my husband, though most were with just me and some of my hens. I sort of prefer a little funeral with just me and my chicken buddies. Gives me a chance to reflect and cry without feeling self-conscious with others around me.

I am sorry for your lost but as many have said, Lily had a good life and a peaceful death. Reading your post brought tears to my eyes as I read your msg memories of my beloved "Noir" came to mind and all the emotions from those days resurfaced. She is the first pullet I lost. She was egg bound and after two days of treatment, I was faced with a decision to make, it was extremely painful yet I knew it was the right decision to make. Because an infection had set in and the surgery would have been too much her it was decided she was to become my sleeping beauty. I was with her during the whole process and did her funeral alone. I read a poem I wrote for her along with a song that express our friendship and at the end I planted her favorite treat Sweet Mint. Which has grown to a beautiful size plant, that everyday reminds me of my sweet fluffy friend..."Noir"

We'll go seperate ways 'til the next time
There are no words to say as
    My friend drifts away
    Five, four, three, two, one
    Then in tears I shattered
    “Noir” went away
    (Love me when I'm gone)
Left me all alone, Noir's going home
And as I watched her go to sleep
I wish she could stay here and play for a while
But she must be on her way...
    " The warmest of smiles
Then she closed her eyes, in deep sleep she stayed
    Noir went away,
She is gone, left me all alone,
    Noir's going home...

Sweet memories come back to me
    Bringing fresh remembrances
    Of the past
Dearest one, yes, you are mine own
From you, true love shall never depart

    The Song
    Aloha `oe, aloha `oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
    One fond embrace,
    A ho`i a`e au
    Until we meet again

Thank you for letting me share with you!
