Not sure if your post is tongue-in-cheek? The Panama Canal would have nothing to do with the presence or lack thereof of coons in SA, they certainly could cross that length of water and much more. Not to mention its recent construction.

Bet this critter eats some chickens!
:barnieWhy do all the cute critters eat chickens?? :(

Colombian and Peruvian building styles don't match up from what I can tell. Well, that was fun.

He’s from Los Angeles. He could have chosen to build a Russian Hut, African hut, Australian Pygmy hut, any kind he wanted when he moved to SA.

It was tongue in cheek. But raccoons weren't in Central America or even anywhere outside what is now the SE US before Europeans arrived in the new world. Feeding on our trash, dog food and cat food allowed them to migrate to all parts of the continent except high elevation in the Rockies.
So far, they haven't made their way to the south of Panama.
There certainly are ringtailed relatives of the raccoon south of the canal, but they aren't raccoons.
Some morons introduced raccoons to Japan and Europe. The ones in Japan are from staggering numbers that were brought to the island nation as pets. Now those unfortunate people have to deal with them as well.
