My chickens won't go out in the snow

We havent had much snow yet this year the most was 3 inches and to my surpize as this is my first winter having chickens they go out and peck then go in and warm up and then repeat all day. They rush out the door when I open in just like they always have. Even my little silkie goes out. I am releived that they are doing well with the cold.

Okay, this thread is making me feel better. My RIR detest the white stuff. Last night my hubby went out to lock up the coop and the poor girls were under our deck steps waiting for him to carry them ONE BY ONE across the snow to the coop.

Silly birds!

I have RIR and barred rocks. Mine didn't like snow very much because it's wet and cold. However, thanks to me, they now know its edible

Last winter I let out the chickens and ducks the day after it snowed, and ice built up.We had ice capades all day long.

They all eventually came out to try the snow, but were scared of the "mysterious white monster" on the ground. Some even went and drank from the snow melt-pools.

Kind of funny imagining a chicken being a part of the 'walrus club". I do know our ducks are lifelong members.

This year they are in a coop and bigger run for the winter.........no ice capades...no walrus club......no snow cones.......nuttin.

Since we just had a blizzard here in the Northeast, I kept the girls in the coop starting Sunday afternoon and all through yesterday. I opened their pop door this morning, but no one wanted to go out in the snow

. The coop is raised and the space underneath is pretty sheltered, but with the hurricane winds we were having snow went under there too and they're a little bit leary of all the white stuff in their run. I'll probably put some hay out under the coop for them to walk on.
Well, what do you know, I just look out the window and saw a few of the girls venturing out

I'll have to give them an extra treat for their bravery. Silly girls.

We had our first snow here in southern NH Dec 26, and my girls don't like it. Today it wasn't snowing, and the sun was out, but not my girls! They just peek out the pop door!

Today was the first day that all (7) of them came out at the same time. We've had snow for a while now and they are definately staying inside more but the wind disappeared today and the sun was out so we now have chicken tracks in the snow. Prior to today a few of them came out for short walks on the paths that we cleared around the coop & barn. Seems like they like being loose in the barn best - with straw tossed down on the floor they have more room than in the coop - these are NOT dumb animals!
