I have 24 chicks, and i fill their feeder when i wake up to got to work 5:30 AM When i get off work 4:30 PM and before i go to bed around 9:00 PM
their feeder is a 1 quart mason jar feeding system. i have found out that under their wood shavings is a layer of food. Can anyone tell me why they are doing this? also if their is a way to make them stop that would be helpful.

Also their watering system is the same it is a 1 quart mason jar with a screw on bowl thing. i have to change their water a lot because they dig up the bedding, which gets in the water, and 2 of them like to jump on top of the jar and.... well poo.

like i said before any help would be great.

They're not trying to hoard on purpose :) Chicks scratch to find things to eat like adult chickens do, so when they're at the feeder they instinctually scratch at it, and the result of that is that it empties out into the bedding. If you put it up on something, like a second feeder or waterer base or a bowl, etc, then they can't scratch in it anymore. Just make sure they can still reach into it with their beaks to eat. Same goes for the waterer - if you prop that up too, then they can't kick as much bedding into it.
