My chicks didn't make it.

My order from the hatchery (McMurray) arrived, but unfortunately, all were dead except one which was breathing it's last breath. I am dumbfounded why they expired. Sitting right next to them was another box of the same size and number of chicks from same hatchery and they all survived! The only difference I could see was that the box that survived were vaccinated and mine were not. (I didn't think I needed it) I highly doubt that was the reason they made it and mine did not. One other possibility I could think of would be that my chicks caught a draft that the other box didn't. (maybe my chicks saved the other box? I really can't explain it. Of course there could have been a major factor in the flight arrangements or the previous journey to the airport. Who knows. It just has me so upset. I am very happy that the other box arrived complete, but I of course, wish it were mine.

This was my first order and my brooder was up and running, the feeders full , water ready and the camera fully charged for pics. What a letdown.

Oh Foghorn, that is just heartbreaking. I know you will get replacement from McMurray without any problems but it is sad and I am sure very dissapointing. It was probably just the positioning of the box. With these horrible temperatures of late I am surprised that any little chicks arrive alive. I hope you get your new shipment soon and that they arrive in great health as is the usual case.

I'm so sorry Eric. It's good that the other box was fine but you'll never know why yours weren't and that's frustrating. Like Jaynie said, you should get a new shipment soon and with temps rising soon they should do well. Jen

Oh, I feel so badly for you!
I was about to sign off on my way out the door to pick up my very first batch from McMurray's and saw your post. How dissappointing and heartbreaking.

I can't believe the hatchery is even shipping in this cold weather. We've never ordered from a hatchery, but we ordered tadpoles a few years ago for my daughter...the supplier said they will not ship unless temps are above 40; seems like this should be true for any supplier shipping baby anything. Also, (and I speak from experience) it's never a bad idea to get at least some vaccinations, if it's feasable...save yourself some heartache. I would sure raise cain with McMurray if I were you!

Foghorn I am so sorry. McMurray should not give you any problems. My friend has half her order die at shipping a week or so ago also and they are shipping her another full batch. I wonder why they ship them where they have to sit in the post office over the weekend? Good luck next time....

Foghorn, sorry to hear about the peeps.

People that live in cold weather states need to have patience when ordering day old peeps. it's best to wait til May 15 to be sure the peeps survive.

They require 95 degrees the first week, please take that into consideration, actually what else can you expect to happen. Please don't take this personally, one can read this same thing all over the poultry web-sites. the only thing i'm trying to is get everyone to understand that alot of this can be avoided by waiting for decent shipping conditions.
