My coop build, on a cliff/mountain.

Just wanted to chime in here with a nicely done, and well built coop, comment. Thanks for the nice photographs of the build and the nice commentary as well. Looks like you are going to have an nice time with your new birds.

Best to you and your new birds,

RJ

had a productive day. was 40 ish so i worked out of the basement and garage as much as possible.

Got the pop door in place, 12" wide and about 13" high.

I also wrapped the coop in paneling, tried to put the hinges on the front wall section. Because I am not using a framed in door and the whole side moves these hinges are not long enough to reach around the corner and attached to the door frame because it has to reach over a 2x4 that does not move if that makes sense...I can only get 1 screw in each hinge leaf. which is why in the picturs with the side open it is sitting so low.

Im running out of things I can do. I need to put the facia around the roof, the run door is finished as far as the frame goes, but I cant put it on until the mesh is in place and sandwiched, I need to paint the inside of the coop and put down lanlium tile, and stain the outside, too cold for that.

So until I get my roof or my hardware cloth in I am at a standstill, Both are supposed to be here friday So I can atleast get the roof on sunday morning (next day off).

Once the meh is up I can get the trim started and get the storage compart ment build and a Roof on it and the nesting box, the storage compartment will be on the side of the coop below the coop hanging off the side with a hinged top.

On a side note I bought a wifi IP camera. that has built in recording, So I can watch the chicks at work and keep an eye on the coop and record 720 p video with audio of the coop after the hens are outside, Would hate to need it but I need to get cameras around the house and you can add cameras togeather to make a system so its a good time to start.

Thank for the kind words, please feel free to tell me i screwed something up, because I have fixed the screw ups Ive found.

I have kreg envy......wonders if you'll have insects living on all those 'holes'...or will you fill them?

I am baffled by the hinge at an angle...maybe they're both at the same angle??

All the kreg holes will be covered. Anywhere there is mesh there will be a board that sandwiches the mesh between boards to secure it in addition to staples.

I'm not sure how I would of done this without the kreg. This is done with a k5 and the HD jig.

The hinges are that way because there are only 2 screws in each hinge. I tried to explain it earlier but the will be getting replaced by a 16" hinge so it can get more screws into it. I just have to make them first.

I'm trying to work on this as much as possible on my days off. I work 10-12 hour shifts on a rotation so I don't have day light or warmth after work. I've been off Friday through Tuesday so I'm back to work for 8 of the next 9 days. So not much will get done until sunday

just an update in case anyone was wondering not much has been done i got the metal roof panels on but no trim and we got hit with winter currently 8 inches of snow in the roof with a high of 12 with 30 mph windgust so I was planning on getting the hardware cloth and trim going today but thats not going to happen. So It looks like it will be next weekend before I make progress.

But I go to get my chicks tomorrow so I figure I Have a month to get it finished.

well I was planning on working on it this weekend and i dumped another 8" of snow on us. Couldn't even get my car up the hill to get to my subdivision. Its supposed to rain on Tuesday so I might try to at least get the doors hung and mesh put up tomorrow then i can start on the sandwich boards in.

Currently working on electronics controls for the coop. want to have an automatic door that opens by a light sensor that I can adjust the the light level that the door opens and closes at with an override if the temp gets below a certain point. It will also control the water heater to prevent it from freezing via a temp sensor. This will all be monitored and controlled through an iphone app. I want to be able to monitor water temp and level, coop temp and humidity, food level, and be able and overide the door on my phone. already have a Wifi IP camera that is cloud enabled so I can watch and record video. Half of this stuff is functional at the moment, I am good with thte hardware and wiring and my brother does the programming.

The girls are getting big, just made a big brooder will post pics later.

Sorry the snow is hindering your coop building. All of the electronics sound exciting and very useful. Keep us posted and can't wait to see the babies.

Looks great. I'm with some of the others, SEVERE Kreg envy........as many times as I've wished I had one, I could have saved myself a ton of headache if I'd just gotten one!

Well done, sir!
