My Coop Project (Pic Heavy)

However, that might spoil the good looks of your back yard. I'm thinking a livestock guardian dog may be what you need. The problem with that is it's gamble, as sometimes the dog doesn't work out. Good luck with whatever you do!
A dog WILL NOT work out in this house!!! My wife is dead set against one until the kids are older and probably not even then. She was never raised with any pets whatsoever and does not understand the blessing that they can be in the home. I am bummed about that, but I'd rather have her than any dog! I was well aware going in! I must admit, I really enjoy the trapping aspect of this. There is a great feeling when you walk up on a trap and see the predator that you have outsmarted. I have been studying traps and camoflaging the set. I am going to get a couple of traps and see what I can come up with!

I have trapped for many many years...it is almost an art-form. Good job.

I get a mental image of you guys putting on with your coon skin hats and going to out the check your traps.

AHHAHAHA! My family does think of me as kind of the backwoods sort! I really wish I got the big coon in the wintertime, that would have made a beautiful pelt on the wall. However, I am sure that isn't going to be the last coon I trap here. Neighbors have told me they have been an issue since the 50's. I feel pretty confident that I have secured the girls well. I just cannot fall asleep early or do anything that would leave them unsecured through the night. Then there might be trouble.

Sorry for the delay, I tried doing this the other day and had some pc issues. I wanted to share the ventilation and ask for any advise. I have a ridge vent running the entire 8 feet of the roof and the soffits are wide open. there are 5 openings on each side for a total of 10. each one measures 18.5 inches by 14.5 inches. You can feel the drawing of air if you put your hand anywhere near the roof. Here are some photos:

Personally, I do not think I need any more ventilation, but I could be wrong. What do y'all think??

If you put a small vent (or vents) in the wall near the bottom of the coop...then fresh air will flow into the coop through these small vents and the warm air inside the coop will rise and flow out of the coop through the vents that you have under the eves. This should provide the needed air exchange so that the coop has fresh air, is dry and well ventilated.

The vents that you currently have under the eves look great....I wish that I had gone that route. Very cool.

I just may do this. I had those circular ones that you use a hole saw on a drill to install and caulk them in in my old shed. they work well.

On another note, I trapped and dispatched a possum yesterday. Honestly, it must have been less than 2 pounds, little thing. Neighbor says that there is another coon living in one of their trees. I tried putting out the trap with marshmallows last night but came up empty. try again tonight...
