My Coop Update

Let's say you have 30 hens, and 2/3rds lay each day. That's 140 eggs per week, or 11.67 dozen eggs. I forget what breeds you are getting, but as I recall they are good layers, so I think this is a very realistic forecast!
Brian,
PS. Don't forget to put an egg in the dogs food too :)

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I get $3.50/doz (the local store sells fresh farm eggs for $3.75) for my eggs from friends and neighbors. The regular "store bought" white eggs go for almost that, and the fresh ones are way better.

Keep posting updates... love watching other people's projects!!!

I never thought I'd live to see the day that eggs would sell for almost $4.00 a dozen!!!

Here is wall #4. We set it in some to make a small porch so that I don't have to stand in the rain to unlock the coop in the mornings or lock up in the evenings. Our climate is sub-tropical and we get an average of around 50 inches of rain a year. On average it usually rains around once or twice a week.

Now comes the fun part....the roof. I'm not looking forward to that, I'm not comfortable with heights.

Ok, tell me about the sealant!! What type of sealant and where would I put it?

No I really haven’t thought about a color scheme yet. At first I thought I might paint it the same color as the house but I’m planning to change the color of the house so maybe I’ll pick out what color I plan to paint the house and use those colors.

We have a lot of painting to do this summer and my son wants to buy a spray painter and use it to paint the chicken house so we can learn how to use it before we start using it on the house.

i would break in the sprayer on the coop., what better place to learn than on the back side.
sealant: i was thinking Thompson's water seal then paint , i may be wrong, not much experience in the area but thats what i had in mind for here. thats why i asked that question.
i am thinking a three tone color scheme like back in the Victorian era.

We couldn’t use Thompson’s Water Seal; we live near the Coast and near some environmentally sensitive waterways and that stuff it really toxic!!!!!

This is my backyard, on the right hand side you can just make out a small out building through the trees with an air conditioner in the window. The chicken coop is going in behind that building.

Any paints or sealants that we use have to be environmentally safe. We have blue gill spawning in our back yard as we speak.

Yes it is, the area that we live in is a wetland. We have to be very careful about what type of chemicals we use on our property.
