My Coop Update

I had always wondered about that.

How did a California girl end up in Alaska?

Long story short, I moved for a guy. He's long gone, but I met my now-husband, so it was worth it.

Mom's upset because I just keep moving north... she doesn't like the cold either! And I'll admit, -30°F is cold. Not the worst I've been in, and it's only like that in January. You'd be amazed how warm 20°F feels after 4 weeks of sub-zero.

I can't even imagine 20° much less -30°.

Was it hard to learn what you were supposed to do and not do to keep from freezing to death?

How do you keep you car from freezing?

My MIL and FIL spent some time in Idaho, MIL went out in a thin little housedress and house shoes to pick the paper up out of the yard and the door slammed shut and locked behind her. She couldn’t get back in the house so she walked 5 miles into town in sub freezing weather to call hubby to come pick her up and let her into the house.

When she got into town and walked into the first store she came to the people who where working there started freaking out. They took her in the back and wrapped her up in blankets and put her buy the stove. They wanted to take her to the hospital but she refused. She said she really didn’t feel that cold and didn’t understand why they where getting so upset.

She said she learned later that a person can freeze to death and not really feel that cold. I always figured I’d do something stupid like that and get myself killed.

It takes a while to figure it out, but you catch on quick. We have block-heaters for our engines to keep the fluids in the liquid state. Some people put blankets on their hoods - but it's not because we baby our vehicles.

You CAN get hypothermia very quickly. You just don't spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter unless you're properly dressed. It's really not THAT bad... we just say that to keep AK a secret.

How's the coop coming along?

We took the weekend off but we are going to get back at it today.

I'll keep you posted.

I placed my order with Ideal this weekend and they are supposed to ship my chicks 4-16-08 so that gives me 4 weeks to get this wrapped up. I really hope it doesn't take that long!!!

Ok, seriously....cinnamon rolls?! I'm on weight watchers over here-you should warn people

The coop looks great-what an accomplishment!

Brian - I'm just really learning to navigate the forum and took a peek at your chicken house, what a beauty!!!!!

coffeegirl78- Thanks, this is a real challenge for me and my son. Neither one of us knows what the @%** we are doing.

If we don’t kill each other before we finish this little project that will be a miracle in itself. We have different opinions on how we should do just about everything and then we spend a couple of hours discussing and arguing over every little minutia. It’s amazing that we have gotten this far with the project.

We got the joists and the ridge board up yesterday. I’m taking a break today and I’m going to mow the lawn. The weeds are going to kill out my grass if I don’t keep them mowed down.
