My Cornish X Rocks are dropping over dead

Well, that isn't exactly accurate, but okay.

Oh, really? Based on our current food infrastructure? I just got a quote from the closest farm which is 50 miles away and I can get 3 pound pastured bird for 15 dollars apiece. I'm sure I could really feed my six year old triplets and four year old on 15 dollar meat.

Not on our current food infrastructure, no, but that system is broken.

All that is sort of off-topic and the makings of a hijack, of course, but it's your thread.

Look. You have no idea how much grief I have gotten for trying to raise these birds. In my circles, I am completely out of my mind. I mean, you do not even understand. I had to give up the kids' gym and karate classes for six weeks because in MY REALITY, we live on a budget, and this has gone WAY OVER our normal expenditures. I really do not think I can even do it again. Honestly. So I know that I gave it a shot and maybe I will try again in the fall, but in the real world, people do not have the time, access, or ability to do it the "right way". When these birds are dead and eaten, I will be back in the store, buying 99 cent a pound roasters and taking my kids to gym.

I think everyone here operates on some sort of budget. Once you have your brooder, lamps, feeders, waterers, etc. it gets better. Initially it is expensive but wait until you taste your own birds. They are so much better than store bought!

And if your kids need to exercise they can carry the bags of feed for you, move the tractor around, etc

Hang in there. Like I have said before, these Cornish X's are not for everyone. Given you are in Vegas the feed is more expensive, you have no where to graze them, everything has to be shipped in. When it's all said and done, you may never try them again. At least you will know.

For the record, MicheleS, I wasn't talking about how you raise them or whether or not there are various methods for raising them for the back yard producer. I only disagreed with the comment that the current way (cramming thousands of birds into a barn without access to the outside, fresh air, grass, or sunlight for their entire short lives) is the only way to get chicken into the supermarket.

It isn't.

I admire what you are trying to do. I hope you give it another shot.

Please provide an example of just how one can feed the hungry masses by growing chickens in a backyard?

1. I'm not the one taking it off-topic, but will discuss the issue if that is what the original poster wants to do.

2. I haven't responded to BR and not planning on it.

3. Take a chill pill, dude. Life is too short.

LMAO! I take them to gym so I can sit on the bench and talk with the other mothers and have 45 minutes of peace and quiet.

I will probably try it again. I had four children in 16 months. God can't kill me. I know I can do it better next time. I have gained so much knowledge and this had truly been such a good experience for the kids. I volunteer in their kindergarten class and I have worked with kids from the inner city that they bus in and they have never seen a chicken or been on a farm. I had one kid that only knew what a chicken was when I asked him what a chicken McNugget is. I am taking a couple to Show and Tell on Friday. I hope they don't have heart attacks in front of 27 children!!!!!!

MicheleS ... You ROCK !!! I am so glad that you can take chickens for Show and Tell this Friday. I too did that with my 3 kids' kindergarden classes.

So much FUN for one and all.

Two years ago, at my grandkids' school , my daughter was not allowed to bring in even a chicken feather or a wild bird's nest as it may upset the teacher's lesson plan.
