this new vet I found is wonderful! When she examined Trixie, she just seemed so competent and like she really knew what she was doing and she said Trixie had no eggs inside! She thinks Trixie has worms but hard to tell as she still is not pooping, just expelling urates. So she gave us a broad spectrum antibiotic for me to syringe down her gullet (YIKES! I've never done it before!), some sort of wormer (it's upstairs, I'll find out what it is later) also to syringe down her throat, and she showed me how to gavage feed her a gruel of layer pellets and water. I just gave her the second dose of antibiotics (the first at the vet's) and it went o.k. Oh also, when the vet gave her her first dose of meds, when she took the syringe out of Trixie's throat, there was a drop of blood on each and on the gavage tube as well. Any thoughts? The vet thought maybe some sort of parasite in her esophagus. Anyway, the vet said her prognosis is "guarded" but I am encouraged and would appreciate any and all prayers for my girl!

good luck on her treatment.

i'm now wondering if this may be what has hit my EE pullet a few hours ago. i thought she might be egg bound too since she has just started laying 2 weeks ago and i didn't get my planned egg today. i'm having the exact same symptoms, empty feeling crop, drooping wings, eyes looking drowsy but would slowly look at me when i called her, when i finally pried her off the perch to check her over she jumped to the floor and stumbled around like she was drunk. trying to feel around she seemed to act like it was painful but no mites/lice.

i'll keep this bookmarked so i can compare my experience and results.

first gavage feeding on my own went great!

I gave her the antibiotics as well and she has perked up noticeably

AND she pooped a normal looking poop!

sorry, but I got so eggcited, I had to take a picture! And there was only one tiny spot of blood on the gavage tube, much less than at the vet's office!

Keep us posted on how she is doing.
I also looked at your memorial of Lulu and its is nice.
I see you have an eclectus male. I do to. Sydney aka quid kid
I also have a greenwing macaw Keiki.. (my aviator).
Wish you the best with your girls recovery.

k, so i found out my girl was egg bound. i did all the recommended stuff and it seemed to ease her before i went to bed. she perked up this morning when i checked on her and she was standing and taking food but didn't release her egg till sometime during the day. my dh didn't seem to notice it going on at all, and i found the broken blue/green egg in her crate when i got home from work. lots of poop too

are there any follow up stuff after being egg bound that i would have to do for her?

jeannieo, how long did the doc say you had to feed her like that? and did they say you needed to bring her back for a follow up at all? or is there some sort of sign they told you to look for to tell you she is back to being normal?

Steffi are you there? I just came home and was looking in on Trixie and all of a sudden she made this ungodly noise and she had blood coming out of her beak! Did I do that with the gavage feeding? I tried to do it the way they showed me, this morning it went fine but this afternoon she struggled so much and I kind of fumbled it, I'm wondering if I got it in her crop? Maybe I scraped her esophagus? I called the vet clinic I took her to yesterday and of course at nine oclock at night it's the on call staff and the doc on call is not experienced with chickens but they said if I wanted to I could bring her and she would see what she could do, she does have experience with other types of birds. Trixie seems to have calmed down now but is gurgling a bit. I am so scared! Please pray for my girl!
