My daschund wants them for dinner

My male doxie (now 3 1/2 years old) went nuts over the chicks last summer. He stalked the coop, he stalked the chickens, he ran circles around them wherever they were. I didn't think I would ever be able to trust him with them. Then when they were about 3 months old, he sneaked out and 3 of them (a GLW, a Welsumer, and a Delaware) cornered him in the garden, and at least one of them pecked him pretty good. He is extremely submissive to all the chickens now. Tail down, head down, slinks to the house. They have a mutual understanding about ignoring each other.

My female doxie (about 3, but I've only had her since February) is going through the same thing with the new chicks. The difference is that she actually attacked my EE at one point. There were feathers everywhere. Lily lost butt feathers, a wing feather or two, and a ring of feathers around her neck. I got there just in time to pull her off. I'm not sure she will ever be trusted around the girls, but she isn't crazy about being outside, so it may not be an issue. I keep her in when they are out of their pen in the yard, and if she needs to go out, she goes out on a leash.

I have a beagle that got over it. It was so funny how he would do his obedience tricks whenever we held the chicks. At my feet he would lay and roll on his back in anticipation of a reward. I would just hold the chick close and say NO NO. This is MOMMY's! And I would hold the chick securely and let him smell her. When they were older, I kept them in a secure run and continued to hold them and remind him who they belonged to. When they got big enough to peck back, he started keeping his distance. Now we have a second flock of babies this year, and he hardly pays attention to them at all. He loves being in the run with the older girls where the compost piles are. He digs, they dig, he doesn't bother them a bit.

Now my garden...

That's another story. Too bad I can't hug a plot of land and tell him NO NO!

My dachshunds have killed 2 of my chickens when they committed suicide by jumping over the fence. The dachshunds were so proud believe me I wasn't!

We have an assortment of dogs.. one happens to be a dachshund. Grimm has a fit whenever there are new chicks in the house.. "bark bark bark bark..." yeah.. you get the idea.. after about 2 or 3 days he figures they are allowed to be here. IF however, they get into the dog's pen it's game on.. he teams up with the labrador and they will do their best to kill the birds. Outside of the dog's pen and they are fine.. the dogs couldn't care less.. but if they wander into their territory it ends up with me running out there yelling like a crazy person. But the same thing goes with cats.. if they come into the dog's pen they get chased. For some reason that little dachshund is extremely territorial when it comes to his yard. Funny thing is if you bring those same cats into the house.. he glances at them once.. sniffs.. and walks away. Grimm spends most of his time in the house.. so I'm still not sure why he cares more about the yard since he prefers to be inside.

At one point a few years ago I had 3 Jack Russells and 1 cat...OUR cat was smart...and would never run from the JRTs, she would see them racing out of the house coming right at her and she would just sit there licking a paw..the dogs would screech to a halt and then wander off mumbling to themselves about "that dern cat is no fun at all!" .....neighbors cats loved to come in our yard , see the Jacks coming for them and run like crazy to get away...most of the time barely making it back over the fence

Now we only have the one jack..Rosie and recently got the chickens so i was a bit concerned, but she only sniffed at them through the coop wire and went on her way..once the silkie roo pecked her on the nose

Now IF they were out free ranging..they would all be dead. Even with cateracts she still manages to catch any baby birds that are still in the learning to fly stage, but i always go outside with her and carry her frisbee..she will forget about everything to play frisbee.

I have a rottie/dachshund cross, yes interesting combo. But anyways we don't have the problem with him. We do have a problem with our other dog though. The solution we found, if you have room, was to have an invisafence or underground fence. It really has worked. Our other three dogs are perfectly fine out int he hard with the chickens and ducks around them, and we have 5 acres so they don't go very far. I made sure the chickens and ducks were outside of the boundaries for our chicken killer or CK as she is now nicknamed. Haven't had a problem since. If you want to keep both, that is what I would suggest. Or just wait out his years, I believe dachshund live between 18 and 20 years.
