Whooping cranes ? I envy you. Late to the party, but welcome to BYC to your daughter and you. My advice would be to attend a poultry show. Determine what breed/breeds your daughter likes best and obtain stock from someone who does well at the show also attempting to get said person as a mentor. Initial cost may be higher, but quality birds cost no more to feed. Good luck.
