My Diet & Exercise Thread

Count me in. I've gone from 206 to 194 in the last two weeks on the South Beach diet. Going to stay on that for another week hoping to get down to 188; that will rid me entirely of the small belly paunch that I still have. Even when I go off the SB diet, I still want to diet and get down to the 175# that I weighed before I quit smoking about five years ago. It wears me out quickly when moving and carrying around 25 one-pound boxes of lard 24/7.

EDIT: When I start my loonnnng-time diet, I will try to avoid ALL carbohydrates that come from SUGAR except very rarely, but I will have some fruit and/or a baked white potatoe occasionally and some whole grain bread and cereals maybe once a day. Other than that, I will try to eat the breakfasts, snack, lunches, snack, dinners, snack that are similar to the SB diet. I will try to eat like that for the rest of my life once I get down to 175#.

Just a thought - it's lean muscle mass that burns calories more efficiently, so if you lose muscle mass, you decrease your body's ability to burn calories, making it harder to lose weight. While muscle weighs more than fat, it takes up a lot less space . . . and the goal should be to lose the fat, not the muscle . . . so when you start losing you may find that your weight doesn't go down as much as you'd like, but if you're decreasing your percentage of body fat to muscle you're going in the right direction. So don't focus on pounds so much as being healthy, and keep those muscles! Resistance is not futile!

Cabbage Soup Recipe

6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
Directions:

Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.

Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.

Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.

Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.

Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.

If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.

You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.

Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Remember: This diet should only be followed for 7 days at a time, with at least two weeks in between.

Day One:
Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

Day Two:
Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.

Day Three:
Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.

Day Four:
Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.

Day Five:
Beef And Tomatos: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomtoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).

Day Six:
Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.

Day Seven:
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.

When I was diagnosed with asthma (normal, and also exercised induced), I got put on tons of medication. The medicine (especially the steroids (for when I get pneumonia - which is at least once a year) made me gain a ton of weight. Plus the decrease in exercise. I used to be about 100lbs at 5'4, but I know that is unreasonable to try to get back to. I am at 150 and my goal is around 120 in the end, but I'd be happy with 130. I have already lost 17 pounds, by eating less. I want to loose it now, since I am only 17 years old, before I carry this into my adult life.

i'm for the laughing! oh i'm just kidding!

yay for you boyd!!! you're going to do great!

have they given you the business about portion control? this is usually the hardest thing starting out. i always plate my man's food to help keep things in check. otherwise he'd eat 3 meals worth in one sitting.

tell your wife to PM me and i'll tell her all the spots you'll be hiding snacks
;-)

and repeat after me: no drive thru! i've been off it so long that the last couple of times we've had fast food its made me sick for 3 days. ick. just thinking about it makes me want to eat an apple.

good luck! we'll be rooting for you!!!
:)

I'm in. For the last several years I have gained too much weight. I was one of those people that couldn't gain weight if I wanted too then the thyroid went wacky. I have started feeling weaker and just old lately.

On top of it all my cat started kneeding my stomach the other day - now I know I need to lose weight.

Stupid cat.

There Boyd - now you have nothing to be embarrassed about - I told on myself and the cat taking all shame away from you
