they SHOULD always give ya the stinkeye,, if they dont, i would look for a roo that did,, the stinkeye means he's watching you, and ready to protect HIS girls

He doesn't protect them though...when they all gather around as I sit on the floor (on a clean feed bag) and give grapes and strawberries and treats, I pick them up one by one and let 'em eat out of my hand.

Some of them squawk at first and he doesn't seem to pay attention.

But he does have a 'fave' and I did see him cuddle while they were sunbathing...just put his wing over her like "MY pullet!". Kinda cute.

I still would love to give him away though. I think my prettiest bird is also gonna be a roo and he's sweet and gentle with everyone.

I had a barred rock roo who thought he was "it". Going after cars and neighbors, us and our trash container - hahaha. I should have recorded the trash container incidents for funniest home videos. Anyway I taught him that I was the boss after he jumped up and bit my hand by also picking him up and holding him for 5-10 minutes every now and then. I would catch him when he would come after me by putting one hand in front of his face so he wouldn't guess what I was going to do and push his body to the ground like when the hens crouch down. It worked - took about 1 month. He would still come after me if I didn't have my hair pulled up so it most definitely has something to do with recognition.

I'm not sure if it was previously mentioned or not, but I just wanted to remind folks to NOT hold them upside down for very long, as they can suffocate. I don't know what the "safe" amount of time is...hoping someone will chime in that knows.

Nuther small update...

DS donned the cardboard armor tonight and ventured into the battlefield, also known as the chicken run.

We were fully expecting roo to charge him. Son walked all around roo, turning his back to him (roo seems to favor attacking from the rear) and we couldn't get him to pay any attention to son. So, I guess that is another victory in the taming game.

Now if I could just get DW to go in there......

Fabulous - and fast - progress! there may be little setbacks along the way that are yet to come but this is moving in a good direction!
