Dog tore out a lot of feathers... two areas about golf ball size pretty raw and her breast area seems either raw muscle or just bare skin (one side looks torn, but the other looks clean). She is eating and drinking (been 24 hours). I kept her inside last night and gave her an hour outside this am before letting out our others (4) and then put them in the yard and let her hang in the chicken house. I have used the Liquid Wound care on her twice now. What more can I do? She seems scared (duh) and still in a bit of shock. Our chickens are our pets... I have been checking on her constantly today. Normal self

Chickens normally grow their feathers back in 6-8 weeks. So she'll be back to her normal self soon. In the mean time I'd put neosporin on the bad spots.

would internal injuries be obvious by now? How long should I keep her inside? I don't want her around the other chickens when her wounds are so bad, but put the cat kennel she was in next the baby chickens were keeping in hopes of keeping the social aspect... I don't know. I feel helpless. City girl that has been taken over by her chickens, LOL!

I doubt there are any internal injuries. You would probably notice if so. I would isolate her until she is back to acting normal and looks okay. The chickens will peck the blood of they see any.

I am so sorry to hear about your poor girl :( Ugh, I wish dogs would stop hurting chickens!! I had a similar experience with one of my girls named Fuzzy Bum. She was attacked by the neighbour's dog. My hen's injury was to her head. I put some polysporin on the wounds. Make sure her wounds are clean. And look out for flies! You don't want them to lay eggs on her if there is any dead tissue. I hope all goes well for your beautiful chicken!!! God Bless, Heidi

Here is a before and after picture of my girl Fuzzy Bum. She is a miracle! I you want to read her story for encouragement, click this link:

Let me know how she does!! <3

Oh man, poor Fuzzy Bum!!! I started to read; will read more once kids are in bed. Thanks for the moral support... I'm going to get her settled back in the cat carries so she can have a quiet night. I think I'll let my oldest child wash the wounds... she's my little 4H'er and has a way with animals. I was concerned that she might be in pain as well... animals sure are tougher than we are!

Angel is improving but today she seems very upset that I have her separated from the other chickens (stayed at the closed hen house door ALL DAY LONG. She still has way too much exposed flesh / muscle for her to be around the other chickens without fear of them attacking. How can I help her get her social needs?? Or am I being too nervous about this? I did make eggs for her this am, LOL!

Can you give her a penned off area near the other chickens? Let them see each other and keep her mentally stimulated and "in the flock" without letting them get to her?

Thank you! Something so simple!

I just blocked the opening from the outdoor yard to the indoor house with a kennel fence panel. Now they are chatting it up!

Somehow they knocked the fencing over (folded up kennel fencing, miracle no one was hurt!) - and Angel was out with the other hens / rooster. There were some feathers around (maybe 5 or 6?) - and I did see one of them peck her on the head. Is that just normal pecking order or would this have turned into an attack on her? I'll update with photos in just a moment.
